I’m halfway through the second feather and fan sock, so of course it’s time to start thinking about the next pair.* (Yes, technically the next pair is already on the needles, but it’s a standby rolltop stockinette, and those don’t count toward the WIP total. I can’t explain it–they just don’t.) After dinner tonight I went to paw through the stash in search of the right yarn for the next pair. I’m going to be making the Child’s First Sock from Knitting Vintage Socks and I want to use a solid or near-solid color for them.

(Added later: For those of you unfamiliar with this pattern or this book, it’s called the Child’s First Sock, but it’s sized for adults. I’m making the socks for myself. Baby gets stockinette socks, not lace. I mean, he’ll fit into each pair for a week, right?)

I started pulling potential skeins from the shelf, and found four good candidates in the first thirty or so seconds. And then found a fifth. And then some of the variegateds looked good and I started eyeing some Koigu. And then I realized…I have so much sock yarn that I don’t actually know what I have. I’ve been really strict with my yarn buying for the past four months or so, allowing myself to buy only yarn for baby sweaters, and even for those mostly relying on stash yarn. (Yeah, that Dale sea lion sweater is on the needles. I haven’t worked on it much and need to get back to it…) Somehow, though, the occasional sock yarn sneaks through my best yarn diet intentions. The plan was to buy no yarn this year, but only halfway through February and I’ve bought yarn for two pairs of socks. (The latest is a delicious skein from Brooklyn Handspun in the Flickering Flame colorway that I received today. Mmmmmm.)

I’ve been on an organization kick lately–blame it on the kid, because that’s not normal for me–and it bothered me that I had so many skeins of sock yarn that I’d forgotten I had. I schlepped it all down to the dining room table to have a proper look. This is what it looked like:

sockstash.jpg

I think I have a wee sock yarn problem. I think I really, really, really shouldn’t be allowed to buy any more sock yarn until at least half of this stuff is knitted. Which means 14 pairs of socks, not including the three pairs in various stages on the needles already. Sure, there are plenty of you out there with larger sock yarn stashes. Thing is, this feels like more sock yarn than I need to have on hand at once. (We won’t even begin to talk about the yarn stash as a whole. I’m starting to feel overwhelmed by it and may need to take some destashing action soon.)

This brings us to the next pair, the pair that started this whole revelation of the bloated stash. The Child’s First Sock socks. Here are the yarns I’m considering using. Which do you think I should go with?

sockoptions.jpg

That’s, from left to right: Lorna’s Laces in Cranberry, Gems Opal in Pewter, KPPPM # P315L, and ArtYarns Ultramerino # 222. Obviously there will be gauge decisions made based on the yarn choice. I think the pattern would look good at any of these weights.

Oh–and apparently we named Oscar Madison after the wrong TV Oscar. This is where he hung out the whole time I was crashed out sick on the couch. I couldn’t get him to stay out of there and eventually just gave up and threw the tissues right on top of him. Any ideas on how to disinfect a kitten?

*Melanie, your socks are done and going into the mail tomorrow. Alicia, I keep forgetting to ask you to try on your finished first sock.

  1. I’m knitting the Childs First Sock now with Lorna’s Laces and it’s working up really nicely.

  3. Oscar Madison the Grouch. Works for me.

My eye instantly went to the Gems Opal. That or the Lorna’s.

And I seem to remember you doing this sock yarn overview once before, and the stash doesn’t seem to have grown so much. And you can use some of it as shawl yarn, so does it count? Not that I’m making excuses for you to buy more sock yarn, because I fear there wouldn’t be any left for me. (ducks)

  5. Put the cat in the washing machine on the delicate cycle with hot water and a little Dettol.

Either that or just let him lick himself clean and try not to kiss him for a week or so.

As for the socks, the Lorna’s Laces in Cranberry is my personal fave.

  6. It seems I’m not the only with sock yarn problems! All the colours you chose are great … but I like the Pewter most, followed by cranberry.
Cats are so mysterious … maybe you should buy another waste basket.

  9. I made myself pull out all of my sock yarn this weekend – the results were nothing short of shocking and I’m embarressed to admit how many potential socks are just waiting for their time on the needles. (I blame it on buying solo skeins from bargin bins and getting two socks out of one ball, but still…)

I think the ArtYarns would make a great pair of snow friendly socks with that pattern. (but any of the yarns you pick will be lovely!)

Oscar? I have no words. (but feel the need to say something along the lines of “won’t that be a great picture once he starts dating!”)

  51. Perhaps the organizing kick is a wee bit of nesting instinct kicking in. Either way, it should help smooth things along when the kid comes along.

I tend to have a strong aversion to orange but if the Artyarns is as bright and rich and multi-hued as it is in that photo, it’s no question in my mind.

Maybe spreading the stash out into multiple locations will make it seem less overwhelming.

  53. As echoed above, let me say that sock yarn doesn’t count in a yarn diet. For the same reason, I suspect, as your standard roll-top sock doesn’t count as a wip. You don’t need to buy much sock yarn to make a project, you know precisely how much you need for one pair of socks, and since you only need one or two hanks at a time, it doesn’t take up too much room. Buying sock yarn is a little like indulging in one little chocolate when on a diet.

As for baby socks, I throw my vote in for the koigu first, and the artyarns merino second. I think the most fortunate babies are born to knitters.

  78. It’s nice to come home to some yarn porn, thanks Cari! Personally I get really overwhelmed by too much stashing. I like to have 2-3 projects in the works, and maybe 5 on deck. Plus a few pretty skeins just for fondling. Otherwise I start feeling like there’s not enough time, blah blah blah anxiety heightening.
But just knit away! You can basically go yarn shopping in your own house – so enjoy that, I say.
I think Lorna’s makes the softest and best wearing socks. And that color is the bomb.

  80. Thank you for posting that sockstash pic. I’d just ordered some yarn I have no business buying (given my own backlog) and was bemoaning my impulsiveness, but seeing that rainbow pile made me feel just a little better. (Also, it’s so pretty – like a painting exploded on your floor)

I also have to say, I’m impressed you can fit all of that in a city dwelling (and it’s just the sock yarn!). You must be Ikea’d to the hilt with some frabjous Swedish storage system that bends spacetime into small pockets which can themselves be carried in a pocket and then unfolded when the items are needed.

Oh, and I vote for the Lorna’s. That color is downright edible.

  85. I once had an incident involving our kitten, Saul (as in, ‘s’all good), and an outhouse. Enough said? As we had no running water at the time, I held him at arms length by the scruff of his neck and carried him to a pond. Unsure whether he would ever speak to me again, and unsure whether he could swim and I’d end up going in to rescue him, I counted to 3 and tossed. He swam out, ran up to me, and started purring. Back into the pond he went many more times before he came out clean.
As for your sock yarn, I’m gaping enviously over here. I certainly wouldn’t be calling that stash a “problem” but rather, an asset.

  89. Oooh . . . I am really drawn to the Ultramerino. Loverly!

Tostones are one of my very favorite foods in the whole world. They mean holidays and delicious. Clearly that is one smart baby with fantastic taste!

  91. I think Oscar Madison would have been quite happy to lie in a pile of dirty tissues. Oscar the cat is quite adorable. Sigh.

Your sock yarn stash is most impressive, and frankly, I don’t think you have a problem at all. You’re just very wise about investing for the future. Cranberry: yummmmmmm.

  92. I love the cranberry and the pewter, beautiful colors. About that stash, I’d be happy to take some that bothersome yarn off your hands…I will even be on the east coast next week. I’m just saying.

  93. I say think of it as a sock yarn opportunity, rather than a sock yarn problem…

I vote for the Koigu for the Child’s First Sock!

  94. The tiss-ew’s, they are…so soft? That has to be it.

Damn cats, I’ll never understand it.

  96. I want some socks! I want some socks! I want some socks! Knit me some! 🙂

You don’t even know me, but Knit Me SOME! 🙂
