I’ve been such a fickle beast lately. Rogue, Thumper’s Romper, the Dale Sea Lion baby sweater…they aren’t holding my attention. Instead I’ve been flitting from small project to small project:
Two socks on two circs in Lorna’s Baltic Sea for Billy, the Child’s First Sock in Lorna’s Cranberry, plain ole st st socks in Regia, the infamous mitten kit…
Then on Thursday my friend Andrea wore her brand new Sunrise Circle Jacket and I was completely smitten. I’d had plans to knit it anyway, but as soon as I saw hers, I NEEDED to knit one for myself. (Kate’s a genius. She really is. And since I get to hang out with her this weekend, I’ll certainly make sure she knows it.)
I spent Thursday night swatching two kinds of coned yarns I’ve had in the stash for ages, both from Webs: a highland tweed and a merino cashmere blend. I diligently washed the swatches–not something I’m really known for–because that coned stuff is chock full o’grease etc and there was no way to know the gauge otherwise. Hell, I don’t always swatch at all. I’ll admit it. But this jacket…I really want it to work out. Both yarns washed up really nicely and hit gauge, but the merino cashmere blend won out. I cast on for it yesterday and have every intention of near-monogamous knitting until it’s done. I say near-monogamy because socks will always be my subway knitting of choice. Rather than wind skeins from the cone and wash them before knitting, I’m knitting the yarn unwashed and will give the pieces a good washing before seaming, then wash the whole thing again when it’s all together. I couldn’t quite bring myself to be efficient enough to make and wash skeins. Better to wind balls off the cones as needed.
Mind you, it won’t actually fit until Thumper is born… Well…maybe it’ll look okay worn open with the belly hangin’ out, and my newly spread rib cage etc… Yeah…not really sure why I’m in such a hurry to own a jacket that won’t fit for several more months (at which point it will be summer) but I am. At least, that’s the plan for now. Stay tuned.
That’s because Kate’s a Genius and you want the process of making it now. That’s what got me hooked. I won’t be finished until it’s too warm to wear it, but I NEED to make it.
Have fun hanging out with her–lucky.

The red yarn on your circulars in the second picture (the project alone – not the lot on your sofa) what yarn is it? It look red but variegated?) Is it Noro? I have a ton of Noro – and not sure what to make with it – as my swatch doesn’t match any patterns I’ve got… What are you making?

I saw the Sunrise Circle Jacket on two members of my knitting group — and to say I swooned would be an understatement. I wasn’t very excited for the pattern when I saw it on the model, but to see it on real people (since models don’t count) really changed my opinion of it.
Good luck with the near monogamy! If you can stick with it, you’re a stronger woman than I am.

That’s my dilemma now, too. I have several ongoing projects that won’t fit me for several more months (if they do at all! ha!). But I’m still excited to make them now. Sunrise Circle is definitely on my list. If it fits you through the shoulders/rib cage, it would look really cute with your belly poking out. But spring is coming and it might be too warm anyway… Love the color you chose!

I had the same problem! I let two sweaters sit in my closet all winter. Now that the baby is here, I’m wishing I had kept working on them so I could at least have them for spring. Now with a newborn and 3 year old I’m not sure how quickly they’ll finish up. So I say go for it while you have the chance!!:-)

Yep, I just want to knit SCJ all the time now. Yours will be so pretty! I think the semicircle fronts will be perfect for a big belly, actually — you’ll just have to move the toggles after Baby’s born.

Yeah Webs! That yarn has to be washed to be believed, it’s super nice after a bath. I tried on the Sunrise at the Interweave booth at Stitches West and it was so cozy and hip at the same time. I plan to make mine in Tahki Donegal Tweed, the apple green shade…and thanks a lot for tempting me away from all of my should-knits. Devil woman.

That short attention and flitting to and fro – it’s mom brain. It’s going to last at least 18 years.

Yahoo, Sunrise Circle Jacket! Such a sophisticated, unique sweater, makes me happy I’m a handknitter – you could never find something that cool in a store. I think mine will be in the Tahki donegal tweed also, but it needs to wait until fall.

Nothing wrong with knitting something for the future.
I love that pattern. And I think I have two cones of that cashmere/merino in the closet. In chocolate tweed.
Hmm.
Focus, focus.
