Have I told you yet how I much love St. Vincent? If not, I’ve been terribly remiss. Her debut album, Marry Me, came out this summer and it was my favorite album of 2007, no question. It was part of the soundtrack that brought us cross country on our road trip and remains in heavy rotation around here. She’s kind of brilliant. In all the rock and roll daydreams I indulged in growing up, she was the kind of songwriter and musician I think I’d hoped I might one day wake up to be. Nevermind that I never did learn to play guitar and can barely hold a tune.

I came across these live performances on YouTube today and, well…just take a look. And don’t listen for a minute and then click away, thinking you’ve heard it. Just when you think you know where she’s going, she changes up on you. Brilliant, this woman. Two originals and a Nico cover for you. Enjoy!

  1. thanks for sharing that. yes. nico meets polly harvey-but comparisons are unfair, and don’t do her justice. i’m definitely going to seek out her work. she does remind me of a rock and roll you.

  3. I am so with you on loving St. Vincent. In fact since you mention it I’ve just switched my i-pod to “Marry Me”. I saw her in LA at a free festival and it was awesome. Thanks for sharing the goodness.

  7. I like how she has that singer/songwriter vibe but rocks out on an electric guitar. Sadly, that seems less common then I’d like. She’s playing a show here at the end of the month – I might just have to check it out now!

  8. I saw her at the Austin City Limits Fest this year– she was awesome! I liked her live better than the album, but I’m not complaining. I think she lives in Dallas.

  9. Me too! Me too! I’m going to see her at the Bowery Ballroom in a month.

Hi. I used to comment sometimes when you lived in Brooklyn. Now I live in Brooklyn, and you’re on my home coast.

  10. of course i can’t view youtube until i get home so i can’t tell ya what i think of these clips. but when i saw her live (as an opener) she was pretty horrible. one of the worst performances i’ve seen in past two years. maybe it was just a bad night, i don’t know. you couldn’t even hear her voice at all while she metallica-ed out on her guitar.
