Life’s too short to knit with ugly yarn

So that Regia mini-ringel sock yarn that I was so looking forward to knitting? The gorgeous color-combo of red, dark red, hot pink, yellow, and orange that was so up my alley? I cast on yesterday, eagerly waiting for a wonderful stripey pattern of redorangepink goodness to emerge.

Boy, was I surprised. That wonderful dark red that looked so good in the skein, when knit up, turned to this awful dried-blood reddish brown. And the lighter red? The orange? The yellow? The hot, hot pink? All turned flat and ugly up against that dried blood color. And the striping pattern wasn’t doing it for me, either. Think blood-drenched sweat sock. Yeah, it was that bad. I did about four inches, cause I didn’t want to admit that the sock yarn I’d been looking forward to for so long was really THAT bad. Then I accepted it. I admitted it. I ripped the whole damn thing out and shoved that yarn deep into the depths of the sock yarn basket.

Back to the Koigu and the Lorna’s Laces I go. Those are colors that NEVER disappoint.

  1. My god! That’s a gory knitting horror story! Maybe what Rachael says is true: Koigu spoils you and you can’t go back! Of course, I haven’t started my Koigu yet, so I’m not spoiled, and you do have my address…

  2. That yarn is really deceiving. I fell for it too. It just looks so good on the ball. I thought it looked awful while knitting the soxs, but I did finish them and finished they look okay. But it’s really a let down from the ball to the sox, the ball looks so much better.

  3. Oh, I know exactly the yarn you’re talking about! I almost got talked into buying it when I was in MN over the summer but somehow I resisted. Thank you for this important public service announcement.

  4. hey, did you want to see if we could work out a trade? I don’t know what I have that you might want but I LOVE sock yarn – all of it, even the ‘disappointing’ ones (I say that loosely ’cause how I’m picturing what you’re describing actually looks good to me…)

  5. And that’s the difference between Regia and Koigu – Koigu I think always look kind of boring when it’s balled up. But oh, being strung together into the sock….. Sorry for the letdown, dear.

  6. I’m with you on the Koigu and Lornas Laces. I’m knitting up the last of my sock stash (thank god it was small) and will NEVER go back. (So I haven’t tried the Koigu yet, but it looks so lovely I can only imagine how fun it will be to knit up.)
