Warm socks for beloved feet

The first socks of the Sock Binge came off the needles just in time for the holiday weekend. That’s Lorna’s Laces in Blackwatch. He’s been showing them off to everyone.

I hope your holiday has been as warm and cozy as ours. We spent Christmas Eve with family–not the blood-relation kind of family, but the chosen family kind. When I was a baby, my family became close with two other families, and soon after, by extension, a third. All of these families are still close. We kids have all grown up together and now there are husbands and babies, etc. (Alicia, my maid-of-honor-type person, is from this extended family.)

It was a really lovely gathering, the room full of people I love and have known my whole life, and people I’ve met more recently–either in the last few years, like Alicia’s wonderful husband, David, or my own wonderful husband, Billy; or in the last few weeks like the also rather wonderful Joshua. (This extended family of ours, it keeps growing. It’s kind of beautiful. This year’s newest edition was Henry, five months old and with the brightest smile on the planet. I knit him a tomato hat, but forgot my camera, so no photo. You can imagine it, right? Gorgeous baby, tomato hat? Sure, you’re creative, I know you don’t need the photo.)

Christmas day was…well…Saturday around here. We aren’t Christians, after all. I worked all day on another godawful copyedit, but in the evening I got to hang out with my guy a bit, knit, watch a movie. The Station Agent. I liked it a lot. Didn’t love it, but you can’t love everything, can you?

And today I’m writing, knitting my ruby red knee sock when I stop to think, drinking pumpkin spice coffee, watching the pine trees outside my studio window. Trying to ignore the fact that I have a cold. Thought I’d take a moment or two away from things to say hello to you folks, wish you well, let you know I was thinking of you.

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday. Hug someone you love, if you’re lucky to have one at arm’s reach.
