Meet our new owner

The kitten…

He tested FIV+, which will make him very very hard to place. Billy and I have decided to keep him and just watch him carefully with the dogs until he’s old enough to get away from them if need be. Actually, so far so good with the dogs. Sadie sniffed him from head to tail and wagged her tail madly and only acted smitten over a baby as opposed to smitten over a snack. She did have a litter before we adopted her, so maybe her maternal side is overriding her evil nature.

Proof, you ask? Behold the coziness last night as Floyd and Sadie shared Billy’s lap.

billyfloydsadie.jpg

The good news? The FIV may very well be a false positive. He’s only 6 weeks old and there’s a very good chance he’s only showing antibodies from the mother. A retest won’t show that for six months, though, and by then there’ll be no way we’d be willing to part with him.

The bad news? He was a day away from dying when I found him. He’s extremely anemic from a really severe flea infestation. The fleas are mostly taken care of (I wish I’d taken photos of his bath! He needs another one, so I’ll take some photos then. He was all skinny legs and big kitten belly and lots of pink skin. Too cute.) and now it’s a matter of keeping him fed and hydrated and warm so he can make new red blood cells. He’s also on antibiotics, oral and eye drops, to take care of that crustiness.

Here he is, day three. The crusty buildup of goo is slowly giving way to the warm compresses I’ve been giving him:

Floyd says: “My plot to win their hearts and thereby take over the entire house is going along JUST as I’d planned it. Stupid humans.”

kittyinmotion.jpg
“What? Stay still? Impossible. Do you have any idea how many things there are to smell and claw and nip at in this room? Stupid human.”

floyddaytwo.jpg
“Okay fine. I’ll hold still for the camera, so my public can admire me. But make it quick. I’m a very busy boy. Stupid human.”

Ah yes…It’s been years since I’ve been owned by a cat. Time to get reacquainted with the superior feline intelligence.

  4. Thanks, Cari, for being a good, kind human being. The kitten gods knew exactly where to place this sweetness. It’s amazing how they come complete with excellent sales skills, isn’t it? You never even knew….

  11. Somehow I knew when I saw his crustly little face that he would seduce and manipulate you into falling hopelessly in love with him. Because he’s a little fluffy cat and that’s what they do.

So glad you spotted him before the fleas got him for good.

  12. Awwww, the poor baby. I tried to find someone who would take him (my boyfriend grew up in Syracuse, and friends and family still live out there). There was one guy in particular, who lost his own cat love about a year or two ago that I had in mind, but he had told bf’s father that he didn’t think he could take losing another, so he’d probably remain petless for the rest of his life.

Although I couldn’t do that (being a cat lover at heart) I can understand it. I hope the kitty gets better very soon, considering the hard knocks he’s already been dealt.

  21. Floyd! I love the name. It gives him the extra dose of gravitas he’ll need to establish himself among the dogs, since the home-takeover has begun. And he’s looking so much better already. So lucky for him! (and you)

  22. What is FIV? Is it the equivelant of HIV in humans? Pardon me for my ignorance!
I almost cried reading this post … but he’s a lucky boy, at least. Keep us posted of his progress, will you? Thanks.

He is such a cute little boy. I’m sure he’ll learn to hold his own against the wicked dogs. (Hola Diego y Sadie. besosbesosbesos)

  31. Aw, poor little boy! I tried bringing home a perfectly healthy kitten when I was about 6 and my mother wouldn’t let it in the house. He came with food and kitty litter, too! In more recent years, of course, we’ve discovered that Mom is allergic to cats, so I don’t foresee any in my future, but I’m glad that Floyd (great name) has found someone to help him out. Poor little baby!

  32. I’ve been checking in almost hourly since Thursday evening to see if there was any news on the little guy, so now seems like a good time to de-lurk. What a lucky kitten. What an admirable human being. My heart is warmed.

  33. Good girl Sadie! Good woman and man, Cari and Billy!

And Diego, will he be on litterbox cleanup?

Maybe someday when we have a house we’ll be able to have a cat. It is a great thing you guys are doing.

  47. He’s so sweet! And you’re incredible for taking him into your heart and home this way.
We brought our current cat, Mason, into our home when we already had a big yello lab named Dixie. When he was little Mason would just climb up on the backs of the couches and chairs to get away from Dixie. We kept them separated whenever we weren’t at home for a while but pretty soon they were buddies. They really get along great, I’ll bet the dogs will take to this new baby just fine. Does he have a name yet?

  64. Floyd! Excellent name. Is that for Floyd-the-immortal-guitar-guy from the Muppet show? Because I see the resemblance…

And hey, Floyd? Work on that attitude, man! Not cool to call those humans who saved you ‘stupid’. Didn’t your mama tell you about the flies and the vinegar? Much better to go with the relaxed way of life. And lose those nasty FIVs, ‘kay?

  65. Congrats on your new addition. Being a kitten does help, as our greyhounds were iffy with kitties, but warmed right up to a kitten we ended up with as well 🙂

  66. Awww! What amazing photos of little Floyd. I love the way this story is going! Can’t wait to meet the little fluffball…

Some friends of mine had a FIV+ kitty a while back, who was at least 5 years old when I lost touch with them. Up until that point she was perfectly healthy and an incredibly happy and affectionate cat. Even if the test results turn out to be accurate, he will still have a very happy life with tons of love…much better than starving to death before week 7. He’s a very lucky little kitten, he chose some great people to own.

  101. The gentleman in the picture with the kittin is his last name Turner or is he related to anyone with that last name He could have been mu father’s twin in the 1930’s or 1940’s I just had to ask when I saw the picture
