Well…crap…

Yeah. Transit strike.

Pregnant women do not walk 8+ miles each way in the winter cold to get to their jobs in midtown, thanks. Nor do we ride bikes. Or rather, my doctor has forbidden me from riding a bike and I think she’s right. So if you need me, I guess I’ll be at home. I really didn’t think they’d strike. Crap. Fingers crossed it ends soon. I work three days a week at a publishing house. Today isn’t one of my work days anyway. If the strike is still on tomorrow, I’m hoping they’ll messenger work to me at home. Everyone else in the department lives in Manhattan, within reasonable walking distance of the office, or comes in on NJ Transit, which is still running.

Now if you’ll excuse me I have to dig up some warm gloves for Billy to wear. He’s biking it today. Normally he refuses to wear gloves, which means he doesn’t own any. And I’m not sure I have any that aren’t red. So a-digging through the winter gear I go. Anyone have a good mitten pattern that knits up in…oh…twenty minutes?

  1. Nevermind. You answered my question. If you feel like walking four miles or so…. Bee just baked up a batch of peanut butter cookies.

  2. Even if you can take the NJ train in, there’s still a decent walk depending on where you work. Cold is cold. (Thinking of my dh freezing his ass off and walking on a bad hip.) I was suprised the strike happened too, and I’m not optimistic about a quick end. Those politicians looked REALLY angry this morning.

I hope work will get you your stuff and you can stay nice and warm at home. Good luck with the gloves. We were sifting through all of our winter gear this morning as well.

  3. Today WAS a work day for me, but I don’t own a bike, wasn’t walking to Gowanus, and didn’t think there’d be a cab willing to take me to Brooklyn, never mind getting me home tonight. I lose pay because of this, and I don’t think you’ll find a single person LESS sympathetic to the union right now. I am one angry chick.

  4. I hope you can work something out, too, because yeah–it’s cold out there, and you’ve got the baby to keep warm! (grin) The transit strike . . . can you say “Selfish?” Because doing this to New York the week before Christmas and interfering with all the shopping, tourism, festivities . . . not to mention thousands and thousands of daily lives . . . selfish. I don’t have any real opinion as to who’s right, but the timing is obviously a political decision because it can be used for its extra weight, and that just really bugs me.

Stay warm and safe, you two!

  5. This friggin transit strike is driving me crazy! I would have to walk 13 miles to my job from Bay Ridge. I took today off but I’m stuck trying to get car service tomorrow…oh fun fun fun.

  6. Forget the work thing tomorrow. If you guys have a car (or can borrow/steal one), start the “Pregnant Lady Gypsy Car Service” and double the fare like it’s New Year’s Eve. Transit strike = economic opprotunity.

  13. I agree with Claudia. sometimes performance is more important than…..gulp, dare I say it…knitted things. Really, the knits don’t keep the wind out enough.

I hope they do deliver your stuff to you. While they’re at it, have them bring you an eggplant sandwich or something. 🙂

  14. Oh boy. The best I can do is felted slippers in three hours (minus the felting time, that is) for people whose mothers don’t turn the heat on in winter. You don’t want to know. My hands are killing me and I officially hate Pony circs.

    Hang in there, sweetie!

  16. Transit strike? Cold? Pregnant? Holy crap! The real question is do you have enough yarn? What can I send? Needles, yarn, stitch markers? What? Just tell me and I am all over it.

  17. You were the one I thought about yesterday and this morning when I heard about the strike and the cold. Hope it’s over soon!

And the no-bikes policy makes me smile. Only smile, you hear: you should absolutely listen to your doctor and do the thing you think right. But I’m Dutch! Bikes everywhere and any time and in all conditions for us! Of course, also much, much safer bikepaths, safety in numbers, not so cold, etc. So stay home and warm, please 🙂

  18. I can’t help but mentioning that NOBODY commented on Suki whey back when. Dammit. Coolest bag I’ve ever seen. Maybe because you were “new”? Still. Hm.
