A new hat, just in time for a freakish warm spell

I finished my Lola Cap just in time for 60 degree weather. Not that I’m complaining… I know how these things go. No doubt we’ll have a blizzard next week. And if we do, my head will be warm, toasty, and tasseled.

I used the Lola Cap pattern from Mission Falls, and Mission Falls 1824 Wool in the Thyme colorway. The pattern calls for three balls of yarn but I only needed two.

(No, pregnancy hasn’t straightened out my curls. It’s just been pulled back into a ponytail for too long. And man does it need to be dyed! I’ve got my doctor’s okay but I only want to dye it once during the pregnancy, just to be safe, so I’m holding out as long as I can.)

  1. Is it just the picture, or does that yarn match your eyes perfectly? Sure looks like it. Great hat – I love the point at the top!

  3. Very cute!

I used the warm spell as an excuse to wear my Rogue instead of a coat. I’m sure this just means we’ll have a blizzard in June.

  4. That’s awfully, awfully cute. Will you be making the matching legwarmers, perchance?

  5. Super cute hat!

When I was pregnant I just streaked my hair instead so that none of the dye would get absorbed into my skin. You might want to consider that if you’re concerned about the chemicals like I was.

  6. Here’s an interesting tidbit that may or may not happen to you.

While pregnant, may women find they don’t lose their hair as they usually do. After the baby is born, it all comes out at once. For me, this showed as charming patches around my face where the hair was VERY short. (Not so bad as long as I didn’t pull it back).

BTW-Cute hat, and the color will compliment many shades of yarn dyed hair!

  7. I am a longtime lurker. First, you look great, I have 3 babies and they are wonderful, Second, try going to your health food store and seeing if they have a natural dye you might like.

  9. You got your doctor’s OK? Don’t you have a midwife? (I’m a midwife in UK – and women here don’t see a doctor at all at all, unless they’re high risk, so I’m fascinated by what goes on across the pond) I was going to add – do a test swatch on your hair first because pregnancy can affect how your hair reacts to the dye – can do strange things! Love the belly pic – I love pregnant bellies 🙂 And your tattoo is gorgeous (tho’ I guess you know that).
I’m going to have to bookmark your site now to see how you all get on! hugs from

  10. it does match your eyes perfectly! lovely chunky texture.
I’m getting into cables more and more- You’re giving me ideas to knit a small garment with a rich, detailed aran design- interesting to knit and quick to complete.

  11. Hi, I am a short time lurker, but fascinated with your blog, ever since you were away for your writing retreat. The hat is great on you, and you really do not need to die your hair, let it grow out its beautiful natural color. There is too much hair dying going on among young women these days! I am very excited about the little one coming soon. A fellow New Yorker and knitter.

  21. Gorgeous hat!!!
You know, I can’t imagine that I have nearly so many lurkers as you, maybe I should get pregnant and find out? (David, you out there???!) Oy, gawd, I’m just making it worse, aren’t I? I’m just teasing.
    🙂
    Hope you are fine!!

  22. I am not much of a bobble person but I really think they look great on your new hat. I love the color! I wish we had some 60 degree weather in Iowa.

  23. V. good job on the hat, Cari! If knitting yourself a hat brings on Spring, I could knit hats from now until April!

  24. Don’t they understand that global warming isn’t good for the knitters in this country!? 🙂

    Great hat. 🙂

  25. A few words: Henna hair dye. It’s all-natural, and might do the trick.

As for the hat, great work! Are YOU doing okay?

  26. You are so cute! I must admit that I didn’t think much of the Lola Cap from the pattern pic, but on you, it’s just perfect. Love it. Shall I wish for cold weather for you?

  27. that’s a great color for a hat, and like others have said, it looks great with your eyes. (if what we got here today is any indication of what you had at some point yesterday/last night, I hope it was as warm as it looks!)

What I love about your “Belly at 18 weeks” shot is how you’re back is curving into that typical pregnancy lordosis. Women have been carrying babes the same way for as long as we’ve been around, and that curve is (to me) a hallmark of the amazing changes our bodies can withstand and adapt.

(I realize that you might just have a natural deep curve, but that’s what struck me when I saw it.)
