The sock virus is also contagious

Apparently Cassie’s sock-casting-on frenzy has travelled a few subway stops to settle at my house. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Sunrise Circle Jacket knitting monogamy. Though not yet entirely well, I am now well enough to knit again, and I’m nearly done with the back of the jacket. But socks…sweet sweet socks are once again calling to me. And you don’t actually think it’s the ones currently on the needles that are calling, do you? Come on.

I did finish the clown-striped Regia socks. Look. Matchiness. (This little photo shoot apparently reminded Oscar that his own socks were shamefully dirty.)

regiaclownsocks.jpg

These confirm my suspicions–I’d rather my stripes NOT match. These are so matchy they kind of creep me out. But the colors are fun.

Anyway…new socky goodness… I tried to go to work today but managed to only get my coat on and head out the door before I kinda sorta swooned a wee bit (I’m fine, I really am. Just not fine enough to be let loose on the world just yet) and decided one more day at home was in order. What have I been doing instead? Matching stash yarn and needles to sock patterns and planning to cast on for three more pairs of socks, with one more pattern waiting in the wings.

That which will distract me from the Sunrise Circle Jacket, all those other socks, the mittens, the baby knitting, and my increasing need to waddle:

eleanorasockyarn.jpg
Mim’s fantastic new Eleanora sock pattern. I’ll be using Gems Opal in Pewter. I think she got it exactly right when she knit the pattern model in gray. Perfect. I’ve never knit with the Opal brand sock yarn that the pattern calls for, and would have liked to try it, but the Gems is what I have in the stash. Opal will have to wait for another time. (This reads strangely, since both yarns are called Opal, but you know what I mean.)

riverrapidsyarn.jpg
Sock bug’s River Rapids socks in a Koigu colorway that reminds me of river stones. River stones are one of my favorite things on earth. (Ask folks who’ve been here. I have them scattered all over the house. On sinktops, in corners on the floor, in a big bowl on the dining room table… River stones in dishes of water with a few daisies floated in it were our homemade wedding centerpieces…) Yeah… River Rapids socks, river stone colorway. I’m really looking forward to wearing these socks.

sugarbunnyyarn.jpg
Mystery gifted yarn, the origin soon to be revealed, knit in plain st st on two circs for my comfort and subtitled-movie knitting. Always have to have a pair of these going, you know.

cascadingleavesyarn.jpg
And waiting in the wings, Cascading Leaves socks (pattern by Jean Townsend) in this foliage-flavored Koigu.

The Eleanora socks get cast on first, no question. And then back to the Sunrise Circle Jacket. Really.

  1. Sorry you’re still a bit swoony/woozy, but glad you’re feeling well enough to knit! That is a bonanza of soon-to-be socks. that “river stones” colorway is particularly beautiful. BTW, I cannot believe how huge Oscar has gotten. I hope you feel completely like yourself again soon!

  2. Look at Oscar! Such a pretty boy – look at that tail! And I agree about the matchy-ness of the striped socks – I’m almost obsessed about things not matching too closely. And that’s a good thing with most of my knitting…. Hope you’re feeling better.

  3. Ooh, the Eleanora socks are going to look beautiful in that yarn. I bought the pattern but don’t have any solid-colored sock yarn. How is that possible?? (grin)

  4. All that yarn looks yummy (and Oscar looks darn happy modeling with it). Socks must get easier with practice, I’m on my very first one andÂ… Oy. Your yarns and the patterns you’ve chosen are definitely an inspiration to stick with it. The yarn colour you’ve chosen for the Elenora socks is perfect!

  5. Oscar has the neatest stripes! I think you need a pair of socks to match his stripes.

    Get better soon!

  6. Isn’t it wonderful to look in the stash and find all the yarns we that are suitable for new (and more) sock knitting? Enjoy it all! I’m going to cast on for Eleanore soon, too!

  7. How in HELL did you get him in EXACTLY the same pose every time.????!?!?! “ok Oscar – FREEZE!” No, I don’t think so. LOL

  8. Is it just me, or does Oscar look a bit like a bemused Groucho Marx?

His marathon paw-cleaning session absolutely cracks me up. Not even to be interrupted by yarn. Now, there’s a dedicated-to-paw-perfection cat.

The matchy stripies kind of freak me out a little bit, too, but the other yarns…ooooooooooo…

  9. Oscar’s such a lovely model for all your yarn poses! I love the Koigu colorway, and I think I’ve been seduced by the Eleanora pattern…

  19. I love how unperturbed Oscar was by the yarns and the photo shoot. And his tail is fabulous. Such a gorgeous boy.

It’s kind of funny how people who Absolutely Must Have Matching Stripes often have to jump through hoops to get them, and here you are hoping for random and get a perfect match. And they are very definitely Cari colours. Glad to hear you’re on the mend, sunshine.

  21. I heard it was snowy there today anyway–a good time to stay home for someone under the weather and not balancing as usual.

All that yarn makes me want to sit around knitting with an orange cat in my lap!

  22. I really really want to make the Eleanora socks too! I’ve just gotta find some yarn to make them with and no… I do NOT have it in my stash. I get to buy some! Yay! heh 🙂

Oscar is so cute and I never noticed his little Hitler mustache there. Maybe that’s because he was such a blur in his kitten photos?

  23. Glad you’re feeling better. That Oscar has sure grown into a fine young cat – what a tail! Oh and the yarn was pretty fine too 🙂

  24. What a lot of eye-candy in this post — sock yarn for me, and Oscar and his delightfully fluffy tail for Lucy!

    Hope you’re feeling better!

  25. I just love that Oscar was licking his paw right until the last photo. He was very intent on getting the job done.

I just finished my 4th pair of socks. All the beautiful sock patterns out there are making me very indecisive.

  26. Oscar clearly favors that last bunch of Koigu – it compliments his coloring quite nicely! His tail is not to be believed.

  27. All of that sock yarn is lovely, but it pales in comparison to the loveliness of kitty’s nose smudge.

  37. Smart to stay home that extra day.

What a lot of socks! My tendency right now is to what three types of knitting on the go. One is a big sweater project; this is my main focus. Two is a plain sock knit in fancy yarn; for times when I can’t focus on the knitting itself. Three is a lace project; I knit this if I wake up in the middle night and can’t get back to sleep immeadietly.

How do you decide which of your many projects to knit? And don’t you ever feel like you aren’t accomplishing anything?

  38. The sock yarn is verra nice, but me, I like the fluffy tail of the cat. It is an excellent example of the type.

Also, you used swooned in real life which means that I may be in love with you.

  40. I’ve made the River Rapids socks twice–toe up and toe down, and they’re so comfy. They work well with variegated yarn, too. I already want to make all of Mim’s shawls…and now the socks too. Some luscious sock yarn in this post…eager to see the socks!

  41. oh my….gorgeous Koigu (it’s all Wendy’s fault that I’m now addicted…and you’re feeding that addiction…gotta get more Koigu…) AND GORGEOUS (3 Xs so) Mr. Oscar! Love his red and white fluffyness, such a sweety and so concentrated on his ablutions!
((((hugs)))) to both of you from The Meezer and Me (and I’ll send them to the puppies, too – but The Meezer draws the line there.)
    Glad you’re on the mend!

    Glad you’re feeling better.

  44. It is amazong how Oscar stayed so focused on cleaning his paw while you moved yarns around. But the yarns are amazing.

And it is better to stay home and be safe. And of course some knitting time at home will help you feel even better.

Just came across your page whilst strolling thru the web and there was Diego!!! Oh, how I have missed that adorable face! And now I find you have an Oscar who is an almost match to my Oliver! Wonderful!
So sorry to read about your and Diegos health problems though – sending you all lots of healing energy thru the wires.
