Coming this fall to a record store near you: Me

Yesterday Billy and I were wandering around Park Slope, having just given in to the fetal demand for ice cream and waiting until we were hungry enough to give in to the fetal demand for a burrito when my phone rang. It was my friend Tad, genius lead guitarist for The Hold Steady, and the conversation went something sort of like this:

Tad: Hey, do you want to be on our record?
Me: Um…yes. Yes, I do.

One of the songs on the new album has a shouting chorus. An all-girl shouting chorus. I’m one of those girls, five of us total. We recorded it today. I can’t tell you what we shouted–you’ll have to wait for the album for that. It was fun, though. Lots of fun. When Thumper is old enough I’ll play the song for him and tell him that not only is that his mom on the record, but that he was there, too.

  1. Wow, and someday I’ll be able to say “I knew her when.” Famous for writing AND singing. Well! Thumper is going to be SO impressed!

  2. That’s quite the demanding fetus you have there. *grin* Definitely a cool keepsake recording for Thumper though. Did he respond to the music? When my little feller was in utero, it kind of became a game to see what kinds of music got him dancing. Strangely, organ music always sent him on a tumbling spree.

  3. Very cool! My claim to fame is that Mr. Happy asked for my help while writing a song for one of his band’s albums. I ended up writing an entire verse. Just call me Yoko.

I’ve been reading your blog for a little while now – hubby and I are moving back to NY (I’m from Kensington – where McD Ave and Church Ave meet) We’re looking for a house in Kensington. 5. What fun! You’re on an album. I had the opportunity years ago to do some sample recording in a recording studio. The only problem was that my musical ability was pretty pitiful, and I wasn’t even singing. Enjoy the week and the nesting!

  15. Awww, that’s awesome. Most days my boyfriend wanders around the house in his “The Hold Steady Almost Killed Me” shirt. My mom and tiny fetus me were both in a production of “Jesus Christ Superstar”. Good times!

  17. Ah. The fetal demand for burritos. I was reminiscing about that just the other day, and telling our 3 year old about all the places he went in my belly, too.

  18. That’s so fun! Woo-hoo! Good for getting out any third-trimester aggression, too, I bet. 🙂
