Meanwhile…

Thank you all for your kind words and support for our decision about Sadie. We miss her, but we feel very sure that we made the right choice.

The day Sadie moved out was also the day of the open house. The realtors had high hopes that we’d sell the house that day. We hoped the same. Too bad there was a wee bit of rain, hmmm? Yeah. So our open house was scheduled for the same day as a nor’easter. Ah well. Some brave souls did turn up, but not nearly the numbers that were expected. We’re doing it again this Sunday, hopefully with better weather.

In the runup to the soggy open house, we had more help from wonderful friends. Christina, beloved bridesmaid, and David, husband of beloved bridesmaid Alicia, each gave us many hours of their Saturday to help us with the million and three last-minute things that needed doing to get the house ready. The open house was scheduled to start at 3pm on Sunday. We didn’t finish getting ready until 2:28pm, at which point we piled (without Sadie. Bittersweet.) into Alicia’s waiting car, were driven to her and David’s apartment, and poured out onto their couch. We were then fed lentil soup and acorn squash and warm, delicious bread. We were at the end of a month-long marathon to get the house ready to show and Billy and I were both completely, utterly drained. Alicia and David saved us. Just sitting in their warm yellow living room, watching Thumper playing on the floor next to the old wooden table that used to be in Alicia’s parents’ apartment in Stuy Town, a table I sat at many many times during our childhood together…I really needed that. I didn’t realize how much I needed it until I was there. I think I told them how good it felt to be there at least 30 times.

And then we went home when the open house was over and collapsed into bed, listening to the rain pelting the skylights. I hope the house we buy in Portland has skylights. I’ll miss that sound otherwise.

So yeah…our friends are coming through for us, big time. As they always do. We have really really good friends. As excited as I am for this move, I will miss my friends and family here terribly when we go.

  1. That bed looks like domestic bliss. Friends who pitch in and provide hot soup afterward sound pretty good too. Wishing you good weather luck for the next open house. May the sun shine, the yard look purdy, and the rooms look light, spacious, and worth every penny.

  2. That bed sure looks familiar – most of the time ours contains two parents, one toddler, and 2 cats lol! And as I lie there and listen to the soft breathing of my brood I feel utterly blessed.

hope the next open house is a winner, it is no fun having to stay open-home ready for too long!

  3. So everybody’s in the bed but you?!?

(Ooh, kitty belly…) Diego looks like the smallest creature in the bed! He’s not really smaller than Oscar, is he?

  4. I must have missed the post when you told us where you are moving to. If by Portland you mean Portland, OR, you are in for a lovely new chapter in your life. I visit PDX at least once a year, in the fall, for a girly weekend. It’s a great city. And when you live in the northwest you don’t even need skylights to listen to the rain; you hear it on the roof and the windows. I love that sound. I hope the house sells soon!

  5. Love that picture. Esp. the ghostly doggie eyes.

I just woke up from a dream in which I bought your house. My first thought this morning was, hmm- how are the schools in the area?

But unless you’re selling it for 20 bucks, I can’t afford it. Hopefully one of those who came out in the rain has more than $20 and will buy it.

My mansion is your mansion. My Jaguar-hearse is your Jaguar-hearse.

    Always.

  12. Now that’s a family portrait! In our house, Dan regularly walks in at 5:30am to wake me and sees me asleep with a cat flung across me. She stretches out full length on me so she “hugs” me and he back legs are *almost* touching my thighs. 🙂 I think you are very brave to move on from NYC and somewhere you think you have a better chance of raising your kids how you want. So many people say “well, this is how it is… wish we could change it”, but you are doing it!

BTW, I have knit 3 of your Yoda Sweaters… photos this weekend on the blog… love them!
    🙂

  14. I am so freaking unobservant. Until someone said, “everyone is in the bed but you,” all I had seen was Thumper and Oscar. I’ve often said I would be the world’s worst eyewitness in court, and that REALLY proves it.

  16. I think the fact that even a few people showed up in that awful weather portends great things for this weekend. Good luck!

  17. I had skylights in my old house, and I loved hearing the rain on them! Thanks for reminding me. I had forgotten that sound 🙂

Good luck with the open house. We actually have the same game plan – sell the house, and move to Portland. We should be going into escrow this afternoon, so we’ll be up there in the next month. I am so so excited, but scared – my husband and I have never lived outside of CA.

Good luck in your new adventure!

  19. You have good friends because you are good friends. I have a good feeling about your house. i’ll keep my fingers crossed on Sunday. It’s supposed to be sunny and close to 70, so there’s bound to be loads of people out and about.
