I can continue to lie awake, watching Thumper and Billy and Diego sleep (Oscar is awake and attacking my fingers as I type, the beast). Or I can distract myself with a quick knit-related post. Having trouble turning the mind off at night lately. Too many what-ifs keeping me awake.

For the moment, I’m trading in larger what-ifs and scenario scriptings for some yarn…(ow. damn cat)…where was I? yeah…yarn choice dilemmas. Well, dilemma. Singular. (Crap. Anyone want a cat? Lightly used.)

I’ve swatched for the empire-waist cardigan. I’d originally planned to knit it in Knit Picks Shine Sport in Cream. After some back and forth on the matter with Cassie and La Brainy, and after swatching the Cream, now I’m kind of torn, thinking that lovely as the Cream may be, I’d probably get more wear out of the sweater if I knit it in Cloud or Grass. The dilemma? I already have enough yarn in the Cream colorway, but would have to buy more in either the Cloud or the Grass, and then dye lot issues crop up etc etc.

What do you think? Cream? Cloud? Grass? Sounds like a cat picnic.

Speaking of which… The scream/chortle/cry of a cat in heat in our backyard has distracted Oscar from my fingers. I’m glad he’s stopped attacking me, so please don’t anyone remind him that he’s fixed, okay?

  1. Yeah, I understand about the what-ifs and their ability to keep sleep away.

Personally, I like the grass color best. Love the vivid greens, especially with red hair. The cloud is also lovely, and would work well with many different clothing choices, I’ll bet. You could always use the cream for another project, no? My opinion may not be the most reliable, though, since I seem to be buying/hording yarn as a coping strategy. 🙂

  2. Grass. For sure. (You know, I really thought you were going to say wool, not a different choice of colors.=

  3. I like the grass color, but I like the cream too. And with the cream, you can knit it NOW. No waiting for more yarn to arrive!

  4. My rat Betsy is partial to the control key of my laptop, and continually sneaks up on me to steal it. Sometimes she distracts me by biting my toes and then racing to the keyboard. Wily little minx.

  5. Maybe you could dye the cream colored yarn or the finished sweater in a color that you might wear more often. That would solve the dye lot/yarn amount issues. Although, since I sort of like dyeing fiber and have a lot of free time, that may be more of a fun solution for me than for a busy mom…

  6. Do you have the stamina to do it twice? Knit one in cream now, while you wait for the other color to arrive.

Maybe that’s not a practical idea.

Personally, I’d also consider a tighter gauge. I’m thinking it will loosen up in the wash.

  13. I’m thinking that with a small child (especially one that you carry close to your body a lot) the cream color may not stay pristine for very long. I vote for the green!

  14. stripes??

or cream with grass on the bottom and cuffs and collar? – something like that. make the edgings and the bottom edging slightly larger so they mimic more the size of the cuffs and do them in the grass color?

  15. Everyone likes the green. I gotta say…I love the cloud. It’s neutral enough to wear with anything but also not totally plain. The Grass is pretty but will it be as wearable with other colors? My vote is for the cloud. I have kids too and things that are cream or white don’t stay that way for very long :o)

  16. While I love the green, my practical side takes over. Use the cream. You already have it, you don’t have to mess with dye lots.

  17. I like the cream. I LOVE that yarn, however it does give off a lot of fuzz- I always felt I needed to sneeze! I just made a baby set in the Shine Worsted in Grass- it knits up VERY green- VERY VERY VERY green. I was a bit shocked by the green of the grass- I think it might be a LOT of green on a whole adult sweater. But then I wear almost nothing but black, brown or white . . . so I have some color issues!
I will post pics of the set on July 15- after the baby shower for the family in question.

  18. While I’m usually a sucker for green, I’m with Stephanie here. Love the Cloud. It must be possible to find the right dye lot for such a common (?) yarn? But, you’re the one who will wear it, and I’ll be forced to substitute the yarn anyway, so go with your gut feeling.

  19. Sorry to say (since it would entail both spending money on yarn and having to deal with dyelots), but I’d go with the cloud. I am not a fan of tan, or any version of off-white that veers toward tan. Why gray doesn’t bother me in the same way, I have no idea…

But I also had the same ideas as two other commenters above: dye the cream (purple or scarlet, perhaps), or do a two-toned cardigan. Either of which could solve the problem with no additional expenditures or pleading phone calls to knitpicks.

  20. What about offering up for sale what you don’t want and then buying a sufficient amount in the color you do want with your proceeds?

  21. I like Cloud. However, I don’t think you can go wrong with any of those choices!

  22. I can’t believe I’m saying this (because I love green) — but I think the Cloud is the best choice. And yes — cream and grass, under a cloud, is the perfect cat picnic!
