The countdown…
How have I lived in Brooklyn all this time and not known about Liquid Love: A Sophisticated Meeting Place? Photo snapped from a moving car, hence the fabulous quality and composition. No, I didn’t go inside. I wouldn’t want to ruin the mystery.
Well… Ten days. The movers come to carry all of our stuff away in ten days. This weekend, with the help of our dearest darlingest and oh-so-ready-to-give-birth-any-minute-now Alicia and David (we were hoping the activity would speed things along. Hey Al, are you in labor yet? How about now? Now?), we sorted through EVERYTHING in the basement. We made a huge to-be-donated pile and threw out a hell of a lot of stuff. All the books are now packed, and will be mailed by us rather than moved by the movers (so much cheaper that way). The yarn is almost all packed.
Oh! Get this. Billy wanted to pack the yarn, and I told him I wasn’t sure yet what yarn I wanted to have on the road with me. (See, the empire waist cardi has to be done before we leave and I’ve decided that it’s nothing but socks for the road trip. Socks Across America, doncha know.) I already had two pairs in progress set aside, but what if I finish those before we arrive? My darling said, “Well, we can just stop at a yarn store and get you more.” Dear man.
So…yeah…packing is well underway and I got rid of a ton of stuff this weekend. Boxes and boxes of stuff from the basement and a bookcase full of books. Today the goal is to sort through my clothes and make a sizeable pile for donation.
And I bought a new Moleskine. The writing in the old one is lost forever, but nothing to be done about that.
Posting around here is likely to be an unsavory combination of spotty and boring as we head toward the move. I suspect the road trip will provide a bit more interest.
Happy Monday and all that.
And just for fun, if there’s a bar near you with a name on par with Liquid Love: A Sophisticated Meeting Place, let’s hear it in the comments. Commenter with the funniest/oddest bar name gets…um…the honor of living near an oddly named bar.
Congratulations on the purge. I took the day off today to do little odds and ends, since we can’t really take any big trips this year. Pehaps I was unconsciously inspired by you. I’ve just finished going through my closet and filling up two big garbage bags worth of donations to the salvation army.
not to say that there isn’t a ton more around here I should be willing to part with…
good luck on the move… I hope you have a lovely and stress free time of it.

Yeah! You must feel lighter! I wonder what bars will be in your new neighborhood? A popular one here (its actually quite sophisticated) is Devil’s Martini (care to drink with the devil?). They opened a second location, and the line was come drink with the Devil again… Not nearly as fun as you current neighborhood joint!

Did the same clothes purging on Friday but because I had pending company it had to be quick and dirty. DO I love it? Is it stained? Does it fit? Will it ever fit? No? in the bag it went. The office closet is today.

i always enjoy the poodle dog lounge here in austin. it’s especially odd because it’s not poodle-y in any way. it’s a slightly gnarly pool hall/bar. then there are always a bunch of places with colorful spanish names like el sapo verde (the green toad).

Congrats on the purge! You’ll be headed out West while I’m driving East to the Mid-West for our annual family reunion. Socks across America sound fun!
As for my fav bar, it was in my college town of Pullman WA. Ricos. Great place.
Out here we have McMinnemans all over, funky, cool, every one is different.

I rode by that place one night on the bus. I *so* want to go there! We need to get dressed up and go drink stupid drinks there one night. 😉
Posted by: jenn
I gotta agree with Michele. Rico’s was an awesome bar; a surprising find in a college town. I used to have a tshirt from a bar called the ‘Frog and Nightgown’. Out of business now, unfortunately.

I agree. Going in might have ruined the mystery.
Best of luck with the move. Has been interesting lurking from the outside.
In college, there was a sketch bar outside of Fairbanks, AK that is more of tourist destination named….wait for it….Skinny Dick’s Halfway Inn. I think every state has a bar with some clever use of the name Dick involved.

There’s a bar in Hoboken I’ve always loved the name of: Leo’s Grandevous.
I’m afraid to go inside myself. I call dibs though – if I ever write again that bar is DEFINITELY going in the story.

Ok, so it’s not a bar. But there is a deli on the corner of Broadway and Dyckman street called the BroadDyck Meat Market. It amuses me everytime I see it.

I used to live near “Bubba’s Sulky Lounge.” It was one hoppin’ place, though I never graced it with my presence.
Congrats on such a successful weekend!

You did drive past Hung Far Low in Portland, right? Chinese Restaurant downtown near the train station?
Posted by: moiraeknittoo
Isn’t it liberating to get rid of things? That is one of my favorite things to do. It is amazing how much stuff we amass….and most of it, we would not miss if it were gone. Good luck with all of your packing!!
Posted by: Diana
Where I used to live, we had a “He’s Not Here!” bar on one side of town and a “She’s Not Here!” on the other side of town.
I was never at either… HA!

I used to live near The Manhole in Chicago. And at knitting camp we were across the street from Nutz Deep II in Marshfield, WI. Where is Nutz Deep the first I wonder?

I magically typed Thong Socks into google and came up with a pic of your thong socks from July 04, 2005. Is there any way to get a copy? I have a friend (really a friend!!! – not me but I’m very tempted to make a pair for myself) that is itching for a pair in bright purple.

My fave in Austin is Ego’s, which you’d think would be very yuppie-ish or a wine bar or something. It’s not (best bar for pinball in town!), but it is a lot more hipsterful than it used to be. North Austin has a bar called What it Dew (with a sign incorporating the Mountain Dew logo), which, to carry on the theme, I’ve never been in. I have, however, been in the Fresh Up Club (also in Austin), which incorporates the 7 Up logo.

Around the corner from me now is Rusty’s Hacienda, where you can get your karaoke fix en espanol, should you need such a thing.

Damn! Someone beat me to it! I was going to submit The Manhole in Chicago. Just so everyone gets the joke, it is a gay bar!

The Slug and Lettuce was one of my favorite London pub names.
Bertie’s Adult Day Care right off of highway 75 near Atoka Oklahoma is my all-time favorite awful bar name. Wouldn’t go in there for money. And I’ve been to some very sketchy places.

Welcome to the wild west soon! My favorite bar name of all time comes from a little shack (and this is being gratuitous)in Moscow ID, across the boarder from Pullman, WA, called “The Slurp and Burp.” It truly looked like a fine establishment, particularly the fact that it was on a back road out in the middle of the fields.

In Vallejo California (not too far from SF) there was once a bar named — Horse Cow. It had a WWII submarine over the front door.
Sadly, it was closed a few years back, ending one of the “to do’s” on my life list. Never went there. Perhaps that, too, was better left a mystery.

I’m still in shock over the loss of the Moleskin (I bet you’ll never leave you purse unzipped around Thumper again!).
How the hell do you know if you’ve saved your stuff to your SIM card? Geez, well at least you can still get in touch with everyone. I think I’d be lost if I couldn’t get my #’s off of my old phone!

When I lived in South Korea, my apartment was near a bar called “Batman”. It had the bat logo as its sign, but no other themed stuff besides that.
Posted by: Frances
I once saw an abandoned bar/strip club in Secaucus called “The Navel Base.” Does that count?
Posted by: mindy
I am racking my brains to come up with a good bar name, but I suppose when I am in the good bars I am too tipsy to notice whether their names are kooky. Let’s see (these are not all in the same neighborhood, and not in my hood either, but they’re all within the five boroughs): Max Fish, Saint Dymphna’s, The Pencil Factory, The Hellgate Social Club, Live Bait. But none of ’em can top Liquid Love.
Three cheers for Billy! And re: the irreplaceable Moleskine, it was so painful to read about that I haven’t been able bring myself to comment on it. Oooof.

I live in Europe (Luxembourg to be precise) and there is a gay bar not far from me… sitting everyone? Parking in the Rear. Top that… I dare you.

Although not as good as the others posted, we (in country Australia) have a dogy nightclub/bar called the ‘Lava Lounge’ and part of it is called the ‘Retro Room’. The weird part is they have nothing Retro in the place – not even lava lamps!
Glad the cleaning up for the move is comming along, I’m sure you will feel a weight lifted off your shoulder! Good luck.

When I lived in Worcester, MA, I thought Shaboom’s was the funniest bar name I’d ever heard. But I think Liquid Love takes the cake!

I live near a dive bar called The Hollow Leg.

You can donate your clothes up here to mothers in the country who can’t go shopping due to screaming babies. 😉
Good luck, lady – the next few weeks will be a whirlwind.

You clearly have a man who knows the best method for lowering your moving-across-the-country-stress. Hold on to him!
And I know about a place called Carita’s Gym and Pub.
Great business-concept, no?

Liquid Love sounds like it’s the kind of place that has a “no sex in the champagne room” rule. But I certainly can’t top it. I live in a ‘hood where the most creative bar name is, well, “Liquors.” Which went out of business. Coincidence?

In Columbia, SC, there’s a bar called Group Therapy. I still remember telling my mother that I had been there with a bunch of my law school buddies, she didn’t know what to think. I’ve been lurking here a while and I felt the need to delurk to tell ya about Group. I hope ya’ll love Portland and good luck with the move!

Billy is the sweetest! I highly recommend sock knitting across the country. Preferably with at least one pair from “Knitting on the Road”. 🙂
Congratulations on the purge! I live in a major tourist town, and hence have no interestingly-named bars within a 50-mile radius. So sad.

I just couldn’t comment on the loss of the moleskine, but I’m glad to hear that you are starting to let go. It must feel great to have purged so much and have packed so much. And it must feel even better to know that you have someone who will stop at any yarn shop in the country just to keep you happy.

It’s good that you’re moving to Portland,Or. because people are nicer there, or should I say that people are nice there. Yeah, the library is good, the Max is good,Forest Park is good. There use to be a restaurant across from the library where you could get tea and cake and some real food. Maybe it’s still there but they couldn’t remember their customers cause they would give you things like plastic dragons. Like the purple dragon gets the apple pie. Also good is the JCC, It’s like a beach house outside of town with a basketball court and a swimming pool, and I heard the best poetry/prose reading there that I’ve ever heard anywhere. It was a Jewish women’s reading. And I’ve attended a lot of NYC poetry/prose readings over the years, BUT THAT WAS THE BEST READING. And Powells is good too!! It will take time to acclimate, though – Brooklyn and Oregon are too different. One is extremely mean and one is extremely nice.

Good luck with everything, safe trip, and give us a yell when you get here. And hey; the Oregon Live K2tog blog reported on the 1st that Blue Moon Fiber Arts is starting a monthly knit night at a vegan bar: The Pirate. Not a weird name, but BMFA, vegan, drinks and knitting’s gotta count for something, right?

Just curious – which Moleskines do you use? Are you the blank pages type – so you can write and draw as you are inspired?
I have two – very pragmatically ruled, because I can never write across very straight. One Large Cahier for my every day jotting and list making.
And second, quite fortuitously came across 18month diary starting July 2007 thru Dec 08 – the exact period I committed with my boss to live/work in Hong Kong, before I return to NYC.

I forgot to ask you, what neighborhood did you buy your house in? Not stalking, just wondering if you’re near my bakery! Also, thanks for the nice comments on Mariko’s blog!

When I took a class this summer there’s a bar called Club Envy that’s really a little hole in the wall with cheap drinks and food. The best part is the t-shirts you buy just say Envy on them.
My boyfriend lives down the road from a bar called “Double D’s Hangout”. He thinks that the owners names start with D, but since a lot of the women in South City don’t wear bras… I have to wonder.

Oh gosh, Thumper is one enlightened little Buddha! Sorry to hear about your notebook and the lost writing! But its also a bonus to have an excuse to buy a new Moleskine book.
As far as I know, there is no bar name that can compare to Liquid Love: A Sophisticated Meeting Place anywhere in the Chicago area. There is, in Hammond, Ind., an establishment called Hoosier Buddies, which I have on good authority- from someone who had been thrown out of there on several occasions, is maybe equally sophisticated, though.

So great to know that liquid love is just a bike ride away…
If you need anything at the last minute, just let us know. We are also just a bike ride away from you.

Down the street from me is the “Adult Depot”. Imagine what you will…you will be correct.
Next door is a thai restaurant.
Sum Porn Thai.
I shit you not.

There used to be a joint in Denver near a golf course that was named “Jock’s Trap”.
(jockstrap, heh.)
My other fave is the “It’ll Do” lounge off 1-70 in Denver.
Best of luck moving and welcome to the beautiful PNW!

There is a pub nearby called the Dick Whittington, its drive-thru bottle shop is called Dick Liquor. Say it aloud for good measure.

Further – there is a book called Liquid Love by Zygmunt Bauman.
“The uncanny frailty of human bonds, the feeling of insecurity that frailty inspires, and the conflicting desires to tighten the bonds yet keep them loose, are the principal themes of this important new book by Zygmunt Bauman, one of the most original and influential social thinkers of our time. It will be of great interest to students and scholars in sociology and in the social sciences and humanities generally, and it will appeal to anyone interested in the changing nature of human relationships.”–BOOK JACKET
one for the road perhaps?

My hometown has one called Liquid Assets. Its a gentleman’s club and its supposedly haunted. Their sign used to say something along the lines of “We have girls and ghosts.” Something like that anyway!

There’s a Beaver Liquor in Beaver, Colorado (near Vail). And yes, their advertising is quite provocative.
