Only 17 months old, and already rejecting knitwear

It was only a matter of time, I suppose, but I thought I had more time than this. Thumper won’t even let me get his new hat NEAR his head to try it on. I’d say it was because the Noro is too scratchy, but it hasn’t even come close to touching his head yet. I bring the hat near him, he pushes it away. And pushes it away. And pushes it away. He hates this hat. So I don’t think I’ll even bother to finish the matching vest, which just needs armhole and neck edging.

I’ll just make him a plain cap from a nice cushy superwash and be done with it. Sigh. I had such visions of Noro purl welt cuteness.

Cashmere soothes the sting of rejection, though, doesn’t it? Alison has a very long history of spoiling me rotten, and look what arrived in the mail yesterday:

knittery yarn.jpg

It’s Merino cashmere sock yarn from The Knittery. The card claims this is shipment number one of the Cross Atlantic Pacific Antipodean Sock Club. Which means there is more goodness to come. Luckily I had already begun to plan a package for her before this loveliness arrived. It’s tough to match the master, package for package, but I think she’ll like what I’m sending her way. As soon as I find the post office, that is.

  1. Remember a few posts ago, when you wrote about Thumper’s first sentence? If my memory serves, hannah’s was “no hat, mommy!”

  2. Have you tried to tell him he can’t have the hat? That trick works on my 4 yr old every single time. Sometimes I have to wait a few months though..

  3. Heh. Well, my little Boo Bug, after hanging on my EVERY STITCH for WEEKS AND WEEKS, then told me she “hated” her new Dale of Norway sweater and wanted her big sister’s instead.

I almost melted into a puddle of rejection. That sucker was CHALLENGING! (And looked adorable on her, when she finally got cold enough to wear it!)

  4. A little person of strong opinions? Shocking.

  9. So soon! I thought we would have a few years yet before they start rejecting the knitware! Better hurry up and make my girl a few things before we too get to that stage.

  10. It’s the age. He won’t wear a hat, voluntarily, until he’s about 4. Then, he will tell you very specifically what he wants. This observation brought to you by the mother of 8 year old and four year old very opinionated girls (particularly about their knitwear.)

  11. Claudia got there first with her comment. “The apple doesn’t fall far from, etc., etc.” Anyway, maybe it’s the thing on top he doesn’t like, or the not-primary colors?

  12. That is the cutest hat I’ve ever seen…I could never get my children to wear precious hats! Jane P.

  13. Go ahead and finish up the sweater. I have a feeling it’s the hat. Any hat. My knitting guild does “Caps for Kids” and I tried to get my son (now 14 mo.) to model back when we turned them in a couple of months ago, and as fast as I could put the hats on his head, they came off. And I had many backup ones!

  14. It’s the hat. My 21-month-old stopped wearing hats around this time. He will rip them right off of his head. He thinks it’s funny if you put on his hats, though, and might put them on his head for 10 seconds or so after that, if you need a good photo op. Finish your beautiful vest–I’m sure that he’ll wear that!

  21. i think the closest one to you might be the one downtown on 7th and…crap, i forget what the cross street is. there is also one out on 52nd and foster, which isn’t too far either.

give thumper time with the hat? maybe it’s a phase? and i would soooo finish the vest. it’d be so darn cute on that darn cute baby!!!

  22. Maybe he just didn’t feel like it at the time and he will like it later? Don’t ask me, I don’t know about those kind of things yet.

    Lovely new sock yarn!

  23. At a certain point, probably around Thumper’s age, Jonah started refusing to wear hats. What worked for us was seeing his friends with hats on and commenting on how cool it was. Jonah then got all excited about wearing hats again. Nothing like a little peer pressure 😉

  24. As a few people said……do the vest, it’s the hat.

    Perhaps Thumper needs cashmere darlink….

  25. May I suggest that you forbid him the hat – as in “DO NOT PUT THAT HAT ON! You put that hat down mister….I don’t want to see you wearing that hat!”

I hate to admit it, but it’s the only way I ever got a coat on Amanda.

  26. Maybe when it gets colder, he’ll be less picky, or the hat will grow on him. The hat is adorable.

My most crushing handknit moment with my oldest nephew was when he gently told me that he preferred fleece hats. Fleece! Explaining to him that a sheep’s wool was called a fleece did not sway him.

  33. It’s funny how opinionated they are even when they can’t string a complete sentence, eh?

Now all you have to do is figure out a way to get cashmere *every* time. 😉

  34. What a bummer! And it’s such a great hat. It might just be a no-hat phase, as some others have mentioned. My son went through that, now wears his all the time, even in the house (he’s almost 2). I absolutely love the idea of a Noro vest, and may just copy you. So know that you’re still spreading good knitting stardust 🙂

  35. oh my god, those are gorgeous. get him to wear the sweater, if you can, maybe with something cotton underneath…great colorway.

  36. They’re so cute. I would finish the vest and just leave them about. He might be interested if you’re not suggesting he wear it.

However, he may not like the colour–nothing can be done there.

  37. Maybe Thumper is ready to pick his own yarn. I have started letting my kids (age 2 and 4) pick the colors of the things I make them.
