In which the non-parents will be bored to tears
Child-led toilet training. That’s been the plan all along, when the time came. I just didn’t expect the child to lead us to it quite so soon.
Last night Thumper asked to have his diaper taken off. He then ran straight to the toilet, shouting, “Pee! Pee!” We put him on the toilet, and sure enough… He peed. Then I gave him some toilet paper to wipe himself with, which he did proudly. Billy said, “Toilet paper? For pee?” Well, yeah. He’s a bit young for that shake-and-zip move, don’t you think? And what do I know about having a penis? Thankfully not very much. So as long as Mommy has any say in it, yes I think a little square of toilet paper is perfectly appropriate. I doubt it’s going to scar him for life.
When we woke up this morning, he asked to pee in the toilet again, and did. We’re not going to push it. Today we’ll get him a potty as well as one of those seats that fits over the regular toilet, to see which he prefers, and we’ll let him use them or use his diapers as he chooses.
But it’s all happening a bit sooner than I would have expected. He’s only 19 months old still. My little baby! The thought of that little tush in underpants instead of diapers is so strange to me. Even though the underpants are still quite a ways off.
oh I am envious! Our 31 month old is so very random about the whole toilet training business and we are just trying to stay relaxed about the whole thing. Go Thumper – what a little star!!

Wow! They grow and change so quick! Mine has started singing along with us when we sing with the radio, and scolding the cats for clawing the couch. He sees them clawing and marches right over, shaking a finger and saying “No! No!” and then he laughs. He’s only 15 months old and he’s already turning into such a little person, he’s hardly a baby anymore.

As a mommy of a little boy who I thought would be in diapers well into high school at the rate he was going.. I think its awesome that Thumper’s showing interest so young.

As a mom of three, none of whom were even remotely interested in potty training until well after three years of age, and having suffered through all the nasty mom-in-law comments regarding such, I say, GO WITH IT.
Sitting here alternately cheering you on and seething green with jealousy.

Wow – that is seriously awesome. I was just thinking this morning that no matter how tiresome the 4 or 5 am call to ‘(n)urse, urse’ can be, it’s going to be over in a blink of an eye and I’ll never get those sweet moments back. At 17 months, we’ve hopefully still got a ways to go but thanks for the reminder that life is fleeting and ever-changing!

My son was a big boy and at least 3.5 before he was out of diapers. At the rate he was growing, I thought I was going to have to get him Depends! That’s what child-led toileting will get ya…but I wouldn’t have it any other way. When they are ready, they know what to do.

Don’t be surprised if he just refuses to wear a diaper again. All but one of my 5 did that at around age 24 months. They occasionally had accidents, but we never made a big deal out of it. One insisted on a diaper only at night until age 4, although she rarely wet it, she apparently felt safer (didn’t have to worry about a wet bed at night) I never said a word about it, all came from the kids and when they were ready. You are doing the right thing letting the little guy take the lead. Creating a battle where there is no need to is not smart, you will never win with a strong willed two yr old. I loved the preschool years, my youngest is 17 now.

That’s tremendous! I remember the first time Noah used his potty, which we bought and just stashed in a corner. He sat down and used it without either of us noticing, after which he led us to it and clapped his hands. We went back and forth a little with diapers, but the transition was pretty quick overall. It makes travel a bit more complicated if you need to find a bathroom, but not having to deal with dirty diapers is awfully nice.

As the mom of 1 girl and 3 boys…I have always made the boys wipe with toilet paper. Once they get the point that they are standing to pee…then I’d tell ’em to “shake it off” And it’s funny…my then 3 year old took that literally and started to shake his penis violently trying to get it to come off. Ahh….precious moments 🙂

Jealous here too. My 3 year old is very random about using the toilet. She’s getting better, but there’s no way she’s wandering around without a diaper or training pant.

WOW! that’s so awesome! I thought The Mayor was going to college in a diaper. He was just too busy playing to take the time to “go”.
and I had hime use TP as well.. the only person to say anything was actually my mother. DH thought it was pretty reasonable.
Good going Thumper!

Yay! I’m not a mother, but I remember sitting for this one wonderful little boy, Kieran, whose parents took the same relaxed approach to potty training, with great success. He wasn’t quite as speedy as Thumper (he got it around age two), but it was wonderful to go there on Monday and change diapers, and then go back on Thursday for a kid who was totally trained. He’d even taken on his dad’s habit of reading in the potty. 🙂
I have never understood why men don’t at least blot after peeing. ::shudder:: My brother even had a song: “No matter how much you shake, no matter how much you dance, the last two drops go in the pants.” :

Awesome! WTG 🙂 I did kid led training as well, however my oldest took until he was 4. Each of the other two were self trained by age 3 😀

sounds awesome actually! 🙂 my cousin had both of hers trained by the time they were 18 months. saves a lot of diapers and is much better for the environment all around. besides, we KNOW that thumper is a genius 😉 he’s really showing it now!

Run with it – my two took a good long time to get on with it. Though as others have said, sometimes they do get briefly interested in the novelty of the idea, and then lose interest again for a while. I seem to recall thinking I had it made for one glorious day with my first….

Oh, that’s awesome! And I’m jealous, too. My 28-month old daughter is just now getting to the point where she notices when she is wet and asks to be changed. She wants nothing to do with either the toilet or her potty though. We’re just going along and letting her decide when she is ready. Although she is fascinated with mama’s “wear,” so maybe the incentive of her own cute little underwear will help her. Anyway, go Thumper!

Don’t get too excited; it may be a passing interest 🙂 My son (3) just potty trained at Christmas time; when HE was ready (thank you very much). He’s already sleeping in underwear and has had only a handful of accidents. He uses a little TP to “dab, dab, dab” after pee pee. Yes, he says “dab dab dab”, it’s hysterical – Good luck! I think ‘stay-at-home’ babies may train earlier, who knows?

This is exactly how it happened for Abigail — at 17 months! I think I’ve told you the “no pappo on, Mommy,” story. She didn’t want a diaper on (they bothered her), and she had figured out what that meant, so she did it. For a girl, not extraordinarily young, although of course the spectrum runs the gamut. But for a boy at 19 months, that’s fabulous. Yay Thumper! It makes life so much easier!

What cracks me up is how tiny those little butts are in pants with no diapers on!

Not at all boring to non-parents! I love hearing about Thumper progress. What a good smart boy! But no more funny dip pants. Awww, we love the padded round dip pants.

My best friend’s daughter started asking to use the potty at about 17 months. She’s 23 months now and uses the potty pretty reliably although she’s not quite ready for undies.
On the flip side, the boy’s ex pushed their kid, when she wasn’t quite ready, to potty train at 2.5 (she wanted to wear “big girl undies” but didn’t have any interest in actually USING the potty) and we’re still paying the consequences for it with lots of accidents. And she’ll be four next month!
Unbelieveable the differences from kid to kid, and how quickly they change, isn’t it? Anyway it sounds like you’re doing it right – encourage him but don’t push him. Aww, your little cutie is growing up more by the day!

My youngest trained at that age, voluntarily, and then reverted some 6 months later. It was messy and puzzling.

Precocious little guy. And I suspect there are some adult males who might benefit from a little square of TP…
Posted by: Lizbon
how cool is that, he asked on his own? have you done anything to encourage that? I’ve been practicing Elimination Communication with my girl and enjoying it, she seems to enjoy it as well.
Posted by: pixie
Don’t question it, just thank the heavens. 😉 My son was nearing FIVE before he figured it all out.

GO THUMPER! Booger’s been peeing in the potty regularly for since August and pooping there for about 6 weeks. He’s started either holding it while we’re out or telling me & using (shudder) public toilets, too. All we need now is nighttime, and I think that’ll come soon. I really thought it would take another 1.5 years to get to this point, with him being a boy. So again I say: GO THUMPER GO!
Posted by: jen
You lucky duck! Not one of my older children trained before 3 … and one of them (who should remain incognito) wasn’t fully trained until almost 4 1/2. I did an jubilant Snoopy dance the day #3 used his last diaper.
Then we went and had a baby, and now we’re right back where we started. Sigh.

My parents believed in child-led training, which my grandmother thought was barbaric. But it worked, though apparently–can’t believe I’m telling the internet this–I wet the bed for a couple more years… I blame the fact that the toilet was down the dark corridor, narrow stairs, and all the way on the other side of the house.

I dated a man who “blotted” – he kept a roll of tp on the tank just for that purpose and couldn’t understand why other men didn’t do the same. Seemed odd at first, but once I thought about it I had to agree with him. So I’m sure there must be others out there, and Thumper won’t be the only one practicing good hygiene. Plus your bathroom will be that much easier to clean.

Great new! Don’t expect the poop to follow the pee to quickly, though. I know one little boy who didn’t poo in the toilet til he was almost 5. Would ask for a diaper when he needed to do a bm. Let Thumper pick his pace and don’t rush him. You’ll all be fine. (Except when one of you sits on the child size seat left on the toilet in the middle of the night – Ouch!)
Posted by: Diana
Woot! Now bring on the poopies! Oh, and thank you for the writing fragments. You’ve been inspiring/motivating me to start writing again, and I’m having great fun getting to know myself as a writer again.

This is excellent fodder for the first time Thumper brings a date to the house.
The Neph hasn’t gotten there yet, but he has taken to grabbing the newspaper and a pen, heading into the bathroom, and closing the door. Just like his dad. I really need to move in with them so I can witness things like this first hand.

WOW!!! Great job, Thumper!!
Having no kids myself, I only have heard of the issues surrounding toilet training. Not wanting to push the child, scaring them.
Then again, I do have a dog who needs diapers now…what size is Thumper in?

I taught my son to use a piece of toilet paper also! I didn’t want a yellow stain on the front of his undies as he ran around the house.( I couldn’t keep clothes on him, a nudist in the making) My partner teased me also about the toilet paper thing too.

how exciting!! my first born was about 3 and a half before he finally got it and my little guy only knows that he doesn’t like to be dirty, but doesn’t care about being wet and has no idea what the potty is for.

It won’t scar him! We did the child-led tt as well. My son woke up one morning and said, “I wear panties!” So we got some underwear right away. We tease him now (15 yrs.) about wearing panties!!! 🙂

Wow. Must…resist…jealousy…all three of my girls were fully three before they were totally down with the whole “potty” thing.
Go Thumper! And please, no regressing. That’s a real pain for mommy and daddy…

My distress level was off the charts until I read the comments from that day. This is definitely good stuff!

First, yeesh–looks like your comment area has been spammed in a big way.
Second, your child is damn impressive 🙂 My nephew, smart though he is, regards going all the way to the bathroom a “nuisance.” He’s busy, after all, so he’ll just go where he is and keep doing what he’s doing. He’s three.
So. Can your child call my nephew and explain the excitement of going to the bathroom in the actual bathroom?… 🙂
