Apparently, I’m easily amused

So the organic gardening thing, it has its down sides, sure. I spent twenty minutes cutting root maggots out of turnips the other night, and another forty soaking, rinsing, and scrubbing aphids off a bunch of kale. Yeah, it would be easier to buy our vegetables at the store or the farmer’s market.

But then we would have missed out on these tasty little freaks.

freak carrots

When you plant carrots in heavy clay soil that hasn’t been gardened before, they grow into stubby little carrot pants. Delicious stubby little carrot pants.

I am also amused. They look like little orange legs to me and I imagined you knitting tiny pants for them. Of course I once knitted a tiny Harvard sweater for a colleague’s metal gecko sculpture.

I think that’s better than the cat pants thing on Ravelry a few months ago. When I am stressed at work tomorrow, I will think carrot pants.

    i love your carrot pants.

what do you do with your turnips? we have a bunch this year. have you ever pickled them?

  4. Rachael says:

Carrot pants are WAY funnier than carrot stumps.

  5. Gina says:

Ha! We get those here, too, but sometimes they even have other, um, anatomical pants-region parts. hehe!

    Oompa-Loompas!

    Oh! Cute little freaks!

I love it! They are unusual and adorable. Growing your own food is hard work but very rewarding.

We have very sandy loose soil and we still get double carrots. I had a 3 legged carrot a few years ago. The third leg stuck straight out, so it looked like a very horny carrot. I have grown russet potatoes for 2 years and they look nothing like store potatoes. Little stubs, limbs, and bumps all over them. Makes them hard to peel.

Heh. I often go for those leggy carrots at the farmers market. I feel like the short stubby ones are sweeter somehow. Or just cuter.

    too cute to eat !

While your little carrot pants are adorable, I think you might have a nematode problem. I included a link to a garden site with a picture of more carrot pants. I love this site because they help you garden natural way! (I am not affiliated with them in any way….)

Good luck and congratulations on your baby, I am so happy for you.

One more thing, would it be possible to hear more about your little Iggy? I have one too and I love to read about their silliness. 🙂
