First day back to work
I took a week off after sending the manuscript out to my agent. That week’s up, and here I sit at the usual cafe while Thumper thumps away at playgroup. I’ve spent the past hour hammering at the business end of things, finishing up a grant application. (Which amounts to: “Hi. I’m a writer and my kid needs new rain boots and organic bananas. Give me NEA money, please. Thanks.” But said way fancier than that, with all kinds of credentials thrown in.) Now a quick blog post and then I’ll spend my final hour of work time feeling my way around a story idea that’s been pestering me for a while. It’s an idea that might be better suited to a novella or a novel than a short story, but I won’t know for sure until I play with it. It isn’t the idea for the next book that fell from the shower head a while back. I expected I’d be diving right into that next book, but this other idea has been pretty damn persistent. It keeps pulling at my hem. So we’ll see where it takes me.
As far as the book I just sent off, well…Gail warned me that she’s really backlogged. Current clients get priority, so I have that in my favor, but apparently an unexpectedly large number of us finished our next books at the same time. She usually gets back to me within a couple weeks, but to prevent the crazies from getting too bad this time, I’m telling myself not to expect to hear a word from her before November 1st at the earliest.
Gah. The only thing worse than waiting to hear back from one’s agent is the waiting (and waiting, and waiting, and waiting) to hear back from editors.
(Yes, I’m very lucky that I already have a great agent whom I love, and that I get to skip over the agent-search part of the ordeal this time.)
(It’s still torture.)
(Which may explain the marked increase in knitting around our house, and the increased time lost to the friends activity function on Ravelry.)
(Gah. Have I mentioned that? Yeah. Gah.)

Waiting sucks.
Waiting sucks.
I got to hear the Yarn Harlot talk on Saturday and she told a story of how hard it is to wait once the manuscript is submitted. I hope she can take solace in the fact that she’s not alone (and that you can too)!
