First strawberries!

null

Okay…not the biggest harvest, was it? One berry for each of us, after our french toast breakfast on Saturday morning. And eaten still sunwarm, right from the plant (after a quick rinse in the sink).

There are many little green berries still ripening on the plants, but these three rushed ahead. I was so excited about these strawberries when I planted them, but now that we’ve been gorging on farmer’s market strawberries all month, I’m kind of strawberried out. I’m hoping the remaining berries ripen at more or less the same time so I can use them for jam. Is that likely? Or should I expect to just get three or so berries at a time for the rest of the season? I only planted them this year, so I’m guessing yields will be better in coming years.

Yes. They can only get better. I have 3 2″ bell peppers that are turning bright red. Just enough to have with my scrambled egg.

We had a big bowl of garden strawberries last night…from a fair-sized patch. I would estimate it at two jam jars worth. Or one night of topping for ice cream and shortbread for 4 adults. Lots of greenies still around, too.

Yes, they will maddeningly trickle in at not-fast-enough-or-together-enough to make jam. At least that’s the way it works for me. Still, they taste damn good off the vine. πŸ™‚

Congrats on the strawberries. And the new site. And the grinder. And the wee one’s landmark birthday. I’m going to crawl back under my rock now.

I don’t preserve mine, so they all seem to ripen at once after sending out a few scouts. Your fondness for berries will be renewed now that raspberries are showing up and blueberries are almost ready.

I agree with Norma. We have a nice sized patch, but never get more than a fistful at a time.

Your tiny harvest reminded me of my Grandma’s garden where she grew loganberries. As a child I couldn’t wait to harvest each day’s crop and I would insist on making jam. There might only be enough berries for a saucerful of jam, but it was fun, and part of my daily routine.

You can always freeze them when they come in and make GREAT strw/banana/OJ smoothies! That is what I have been doing.

Congratulations on your berries. If I remember correctly my Mom would use a minimum of twenty pounds of strawberries to make enough jam to get us through the year, of course this was when we could race through jam like it was going out of style she would also use the same amount to make blackberry jam etc. I think she found it easier to go to a u-pick or a fruit stand and buy what she needed because it was hard to grow that much fruit at once herself. What I miss the most are canned cherries and peaches, we used to drive around and ask farmers with orchards if we could pick their fruit, there is nothing like eating peaches straight from the tree.
