Getting ready…

null

Thanks to that self-imposed cooling-off period, I’m not allowed to start revisions on the new novel until July 8th. It was a good decision to hold off, but it’s absolute torture. I want to dive in and get back to work. NOW.

To take the edge off the antsiness (is that even a word?), I’ve started to assemble the supplies (paper clips, binder clips, index cards, paper to print out the first draft. Also necessary but not pictured: coffee. Lots of it. And black gel ink pens, which I have yet to procure.) Tomorrow I’m going to let myself print out the hard copy of the first draft, which will feel like I’m doing something, but I will not allow myself to read even a word of it, much less start to mark it all up.

And once that hard copy is printed out, I may have to ask Billy to hide it somewhere so I don’t find myself sneaking off to thumb through it.

I’d love to hear about your novel revision process. I’m developing a novella into a novel-length piece, but I also have a novel I wrote before grad school that I plan to revise. What a project!!

๐Ÿ™‚ i would imagine that the feeling you have right now is akin to someone REALLY wanting a cigarette after having just quit.

can’t wait to hear your thoughts after you read it again!

Man, you must have a fair amount of self-discipline to think you can print it out and not start editing for another week and a half. Either that or a husband who can really hide things!

oh.. how tantalizingly exciting. I especially love the ritualistic aspect of preparing before a big dive project review. Extra sticky pads — check. Paper clips — check. Blue jellyink pens — check. (I prefer blue – so I can see it better – but red is too harsh, and other colors are silly. Although you did convert me to a no-line Moleskine, I love love love doodling now). Hide the manual well, Billy.

I love your Assemblage of Necessaries. I’m the same way when I’m about to start something momentous, whether it’s a revision or a life milestone. Sometimes the buying of the stationery is the first outward signal to myself that I’m trying to do something new — like the sudden, inexplicable acquisition of a shiny new journal when the previous one isn’t half full.

I am sending you good creative hopes.

I lost you for a few weeks there – and then one day I looked around and thought, where IS Cari.
And Utopia proved easy to remember.
And I am GLAD to read about your life there.
And I want some fresh kale pretty please.
And anyone with the nerve to tell you what you can or cannot write, particularly on, but not limited to, Thumper’s birthday, can go jump in the lake.

Ah, that makes sense. When you said you were going to print it I thought that might be too much temptation. But if you have a keeper to hide it, no problemo! Have fun picking up the necessary supplies and enjoy the anticipation (I know it must be hard). Best wishes!
