Grateful that I’m not a vegan

In Utopia, your neighbors turn up on your doorstep with eggs they’ve just gathered from their chicken coop.

Aren’t they beautiful? The white ones aren’t actually white. They’re a very pale blue. I’ve never had eggs quite this fresh before, and I’ve certainly never before had eggs from chickens I know personally. These eggs will be dinner tonight, along with some steamed broccoli and this week’s sourdough.

  5. Eggs are so beautiful when they’re like that. And I think blue ones are the prettiest of all. I’ve had fresh eggs a few times and felt that they tasted quite different from grocery-store ones.

  6. I love the pale blue ones. My friend hens lay those and also pale green ones. They are so pretty…and yummy 🙂

  9. We kept hens when I was a kid – the eggs were so wonderfully delicious. The yolks were vivid and stood up from the white, and the shells were hard and thick… mmmm.

  10. As soon as I saw this picture, I started to sing “the incredible, edible egg”! They look incredible and will be highly edible, I bet!

  11. How awesome is that!?

Also, if you WERE vegan, apparently Portland is the place to be — it’s like vegan mecca these days!

  17. I’m *this* close to wanting to get some laying hens. But instead, I go to my local stores and get eggs (ungraded, unclassified — I love that) that look just like those. Didn’t they taste WONDERFUL? (as I’m sure you’ve already consumed them)

  18. Wow wow wow!

We move next week. Our neighbors don’t look like the chicken-keeping types, but that is very cool. I can’t wait to get to Portland!

  19. very nice! We occasionally get eggs from my brother-in-law’s farm. Not often enough, though.

If you get more, there’s a great recipe in animal, vegetable, miracle for a savory bread pudding that is incredible. I mad it last week with sourdough, and it was really, really good. It does use milk, though. Is Thumper still lactose-intolerant?

  20. Oh so lovely. Do you read Kristin Nicholas’ knitting blog? She keeps chickens and has photos of bowls of beautifully colored eggs, too.

  25. We’ve been all about the soft boiled eggs for breakfast, lunch and dinner lately in our house. They are heavenly.

And…they might spurn a collection in vintage egg cups. Bonus!

  26. Oooo, and fresh eggs are SO good! I think they are quite different from store-bought. You guys are going to have a yummy dinner!

  27. Oh yeah, there is nothing like fresh eggs! Our neighbors have chickens and we’ve benefited from that, too. We have an old pump house on our property that will become a chicken coop of our very own at some point over the next year. Whee! Love them eggs.

  28. Beautiful. I don’t much like to eat them but I’ve always loved the way they look. But isn’t the baby vegan? Or is it just milk he doesn’t eat?

  33. YUM! just wait til you start eating tomatoes like apples, fresh from the vine. yeah!

  34. Late to the party (was at a conference listening to Haven Kimmell, Mary Karr, Michael Chabon, Yan Martel, Kathleen Norris and — the best — Brian Doyle.) Just affirming what you already know. Self-publishing isn’t for serious literary fiction like yours. Hold tight and keep typing — and bake that bread.

  35. Great eggs. Great neigbors! Let’s all live in Utopia. BTW – I hope you’re feeling better. Have you ever tried rubbing an ice cube on your sprouting cold sores? I find it’s the BEST remedy. It nips mine in the bud. Works like a charm every time – and no DRUGS.
