Guilty pleasures

So I’m curious…what are your favorite guilty pleasure songs? The songs you’re a little bit embarrassed to admit you love? The songs you’ll only sing along to if no one else is around?

I’m comin’ out with mine here. I’m ready to admit it. I’ve been listening to it all day.

It’s “Father Figure” by George Michael. I love it. I’ve always loved it. Even though it makes me feel ever so slightly dirty.

Okay…so fess up, folks. What have YOU been singing with the blinds pulled down?

  2. I’m not ashamed of my love for Abba, but I do get embarassed about how much I like “Unbelievable” by EMF. And though it might be OK to like Def Leppard’s “Photograph” in a kitschy way, I actually really sincerely love it and that’s really uncool. Oh, and I know way more about the Monkees than I do about the Beatles, and though I know I should be deeply ashamed, I’m not really motivated to do anything to correct the situation (and I listen to the Monkees all the time).

  3. at least we can attribute some of our love for george michael (um Faith anyone? what a great video!!) to our age/the time period in which we went to high school. i mean if you listened to wham how are you not going to love the improved sounds of george michael. i just wish i could explain how 2 live crew “it’s your birthday” snuck its way into the song memory place in my mind!!!

  4. OK now you’ve got me searching 2 live crew lyrics on the web (i’ll probably get fired) and there’s no song called that so who knows what it actually is. but it’s the one where in the video the police lady comes in a little outfit and starts dancing with… oh never mind!!!! 🙂

  7. Open Arms by Journey — I love that one. Thanks for bringing up the topic. There should be no shame in it, but there is! Great site.

  8. This is way harder than I thought it would be! I like a lot of music that I don’t feel guilty about (hello, Def Leppard’s “Photograph”? Great song!). I’ve got a soft spot for 80s and 90s hair bands. Um… singing along to Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” makes me WAY too happy! I know there has to be something REALLY nerdy and embarrassing… I’ll keep thinking…

  10. Aw, MAN, what a great question to come out of “no reading” to! I’m with Alison–there are plenty of songs I love that I probably should be ashamed to, and yet I’m not. I also think NO ONE should EVER be ashamed of their ABBA love. Hello, “Muriel’s Wedding?” So let’s see…I feel just a wee bit silly for liking Destiny Child’s “Bootylicious,” but silly isn’t shame…I’m going to have to keep thinking about this.

  11. George Michael is cool and nothing to be embarrassed about! At least that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. And I love ‘Copacabana’ by Mr Manilow. Have an 8 minute version of it on my computer and when I’m alone in the office I sometimes play it and do high kicks and cheesy showdance.

  13. “Father Figure” is my guilty pleasure too! I am also a closet fan of Neil Diamond. And once in awhile I’ll pull out my “Best of the Bay City Rollers” CD.

  15. OK, I don’t care what anyone says; anything Prince does is cool. Especially “When Doves Cry”! So nice try, Heidi. 😉 I’ve got one that isn’t cool: Was at a pub Friday after work, and the song “I’ve had the time of my life” from Dirty Dancing came on, and oh yeah I started to sing, and then I thought: I have to tell Cari! Guilty!

  16. Haha! I’m with Rachael on anything ABBA – Waterloo is my favorite, though. Dead or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round” also gets high points. I also sing out loud (and quite badly) to Shakira songs, but the ones she sang BEFORE she went blond and bilingual. (…estoy aqui…queriendote…ahogandome entre fotos y recuerdos…) I am weird 🙂

  17. OK, Cari, I hope you have a thing that alerts you to this way-late comment; I was away from blogland last week. Just wanted to say that my dear English-prof pal Lizzi made a soundtrack tape to _Moby-Dick_ that includes “Father Figure,” but without the cassette in hand I cannot say for sure which chapter it represents . . .
