Housekeeping

I’ve just now finished reading Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson.

Oh my god.

I’ve said before, on several occasions and to various people, that it’s neither possible nor desirable to write a perfect novel.

I take it back. I take it all back.

I was very, very wrong.

Ah yes, one of my favorite books of all time. Glad you enjoyed it ๐Ÿ™‚

However, I just couldn’t get into Gilead. What’s up with that?!

Thanks for the tip — I’m between books right now. Or at least between books that I”m interested in. And a little research reveals that she’s right here in Iowa City at the Writers’ Workshop!

I need to reread that. It’s been too long.

Oddly, I couldn’t finish her next book, Gilead, although many people thought it better than Housekeeping.

Having married an English major from the University of Iowa, I was able to pluck this book right off one of our book shelves this morning. He has collected a good library. I will add it to the pile next to my nightstand. Thank you for the recommendation.

Housekeeping is the only book that I’ve stayed up all night to read, and I had the same impression that you did. It’s perfect. I couldn’t, in fact, read Gilead because of it. I kept starting it and putting it down, scared she couldn’t live up to it, not wanting to be let down. But I will eventually read the next two.
