It’s (probably) a boy

16 weeks 2.jpg

We had the 16-week sonogram this morning and the tech said that she was 70% sure it’s a boy in there. We’ll get a clearer view at the 20-week sonogram. I’ve been having boy feelings all along, though, so…

Yes, we have a name picked out. We won’t be posting the baby’s name online at any time, ever, for any reason, before or after birth (for security and privacy reasons) so please kindly don’t ask.

I hope everyone had a great New Year’s. I’ll write up that baby sweater pattern soon, and post it. Before this week is out, definitely.

  1. Yeah! Boys are good! Let’s have an internet baby name contest. We can make up a fabulous pseudo internet name that will never embarrass him in person when he’s say 12 and everything is embarrassing anyway…

  2. Yay for boys. I totally understand you’re wanting to keep the name private. Isn’t it exciting to see a real baby in there? Although I find ultrasounds a little disturbing when you can see the baby and see through it at the same time.

  3. I knew it was a boy with your complexion and all. It’s the hormones!! That’s what happened to me when I had my son. Go boys!!

  4. I definitely think the baby needs a fabulous pseudonym for the Internet.
    Congrats on the boy!

  5. Funny I had girl vibes the whole time I was pregnant with Emma. See, a momma knows.

He’s a very cute blob (I think sonograms are magic).

  6. Congrats on the boy. I totally agree with not telling his name. Perhaps you could have a “give the kid his online name” contest or something.

  7. I haven’t had my second sonogram yet… waiting until 20 weeks.. but this is exciting to me because, hey, that’s prolly what Schnecke looks like! (Schnecke is german for snail and a useful gender-neutral name for now.) I got promoted a half week though! I swear, they move my due date at EVERY visit… it’s crept from June 20-something to June 9th! So I’m either 17 or 18 weeks, depending on who I want to believe.

Wow – Schnecke has a backbone? I think I’m gonna go get hormonal now.

  8. EVERYONE’s having boys!! I really appreciate your finding out, though. It’s so inconsiderate when people don’t find out the sex — then I don’t know what to knit them!!

  9. Look! A mini-Cari!

I sort of like the nickname Schnecke, but then I come from the Germanic peoples so little wonder. It also means “cinnamon roll” to some of us.

  10. Wow, so amazing. But it makes me wonder, do OBs give out digital versions of sonograms now, for easier emailing/posting? A sign of our e-times?

  11. I love how sort of Alien-esque and moody sonograms are. It’s hard to believe what lies in store. I’m in for the Yoda sweater — just found out my cousin’s expecting!

  12. Oook! Hi, li’l dude!
You are *so* lucky you’re getting born in the Summer.

I think I’ll call him Lizzy.

And, he looks adorable, of course!

  14. Yaay! Guess momma’s intuition was right (or at least 70% right?). I would love to know what name you came up with for the little guy, but I can totally respect your reasonings. You’ll have to come up with a cute bloggy nickname for him 🙂

  15. I think he needs a good pseudonym, too! I’m not feeling creative enough to suggest any, though. Tired after a long day at work.

  37. When I had my first songogram my son crossed his legs so the doctor couldn’t see “the goods”. The doctor finally gave up and left the room. I felt my son roll over – obviously thinking he was safe from dectection now that the doctor was gone. Then the tech came back in and gave it one more try – now looking from the butt end – and yep, it wasa boy. He was on his own agenda then and has been ever since. 🙂

  40. oh! he’s adorable – and curled up but not yet cramped. Are you feeling quickening yet?

(I trust your (and other mothers to be)’s intuition, but I did giggle at the thought of the little one tricking everyone and suddenly being a “girl” version. Some of the docs I worked with would refer to that as a “pink” switch, but I know traditional colors aren’t everyones cup of tea.)

I hope you and your family (both human and animal) are staying warm!

  41. A friend of mine actually just found out she’s pregnant and due in the beginning of July. She’ll be the first of any of my group to have a baby (he/she will be born a few weeks before she turns 25). They’ve decided not to find out the sex because they want to be surprised and also because so many times you don’t find out it is wrong until they’re born. over at http://pinkmartinis.com, she was told it was a girl, got everything in pink, and found out during a checkup (on the original due date) that little miss pink was really a little mister! At least if that happens to you, blue is a little less assumed to be a boy than pink is to a girl…

  42. Hooray for baby boys! During my very first visit to the obstetrician, she told me that Noah was roughly the size of one grain of rice. He was immediately stuck with the nickname “rice grain” until I decided on his actual name. Sonogram photos are the coolest, aren’t they? Congrats to you and Billy.

  43. Very exciting news! Totally get you not sharing the news, but I will happily (okay happy but frustatedly) remain curious. Nickname, Yoda? Silly, but I worked with a couple (I’m a doula) who nicknamed their kid Sky Walker while cooking.

  45. How exciting! I love seeing those ultrasounds. They’re so reassuring. I have one in a couple of weeks and can’t wait to see actual limbs and body parts like yours, as opposed to the bloblike form I saw at 7.5 weeks. 🙂 I also appreciate that you’re not going to publish little one’s name. That’s smart.

  70. Welcome to the world of boys! It is different from the girl world. My 3 year old continually knocks over things he builds, and it drives me NUTS! So, I asked my husband why little man demonstrates this crazy behavior. The husband calmly answered, “Because it is fun, Holly Jo.” Oh. I see now.

  71. It’s so fun to be reminded of pregnant things. Like, even though you see the pictures and all, and logically you know what’s going on, it’s still a surprise when after the birth, you have a baby.

When I saw the sonogram of the “unplanned” child my parents expected me to give up, my morning sickness vanished, and I was filled with such love I floated through the rest of my pregnancy. She kicked for the first time that day, too. She is the great joy in my life (and at sixteen, sometimes the great aggravation, too!). I wish you and your family all the best.
