Lorna’s revenge

You may recall an incident awhile back that involved Billy watching me knit the first in a pair of socks for him, allowing me to finish the first sock before admitting he didn’t like the colorway.

Well.

Yesterday morning, rushing around to get dressed for work, he reached into a pile of recently washed handknit socks and pulled out what he thought was a pair of his socks. Except they were too small. Because they were mine–the socks that had been meant for his feet and which were then resized for my smaller feet. So this leads to two points.

  • Point the first: If he hadn’t rejected the socks when I was knitting them for him, he would have had warm toasty handknit socks on his feet yesterday instead of lowly storebought socks.
  • Point two: I have enough handknit socks right now to get me through two weeks without sock washing. He has two pair currently. (We’ve both lost pairs to big big holes and accidental felting and other sockly horrors.)
  • Point 2a: The man needs more handknit socks. I’ve already cast on for a new pair. (Opal Tiger)
  • Point 2b: I need more handknit socks. What would I do after two weeks if for some reason I was unable to wash the current sock supply? Clearly I need at least another week’s worth. I’ve already cast on for a new pair for me. (Also Opal Tiger)
  • Point 2c: Thumper shall also have Opal Tiger socks (he’s outgrown the pair that were gifted when he was born) so we can annoy people with how cute we are with our matching family socks.

  1. Please can we have a photo of matching family tiger feet when they’re all done?

  2. ‘Cause that’s the thing…once you have kids you never know when you’ll manage to get all the laundry done!

  5. I think Billy should learn to knit sock too. Can you imagine all the handknit sock?! Heaven!

  6. I agree with Julia, Billy needs to learn to knit his own socks. This way he knows that he will at least have some. After all, your priority should be your feet followed by Thumper’s.

  7. And the moral of the story is: “Never reject gift socks for their colorway.”

  8. As a relatively new convert to the sock knitting craze I have only 1 pair that I have made, and 1 pair that came to me during Sock Wars. I have made a pair in Opal Tiger for my 5 year old and now Daddy wants some too. Bought the DK version for him as couldn’t bear the thought of 4ply for big feet!

Think I too see matching tiger socks in the household!

  13. And another point… there are never TOO MANY handknit socks; one always needs more. Which is why, for me, socks are always the default knitting option, the thing to reach for when you need a portable, mindless knitting project. Always needed, always appreciated.

  14. Never believe a man when he says he won’t wear a color? Your family will be very charming with hand knit Tiger socks. You can never have too many socks or too many socks on the needles…obviously. 😉

  17. I have an opposite problem; every time I cast on a pair of socks my hubby says, “Are those for me?” If the answer is no I get “the pout” face.

The problem is once you start wearing hand knit socks you just can’t go back. And when you gift a pair you are committed to make more for that person in the future.

  18. I think matching socks will be cool! I still don’t have enough hand knit socks of my own for 2 weeks worth. I don’t get that seeing as I am always making them and I can’t recall giving that many pairs away. Must knit socks faster.

  19. Am I the only heretic who washes her handknit socks in the washer and dryer? Even the koigu and fleece artist ones?

I must need more socks so I can stop this practice. I only have 6 pairs.

  20. I find it hilarious that he tried to pull out a pair he rejected before….

I did tell you about the several hundred yards of llama down I spun to make a scarf for Spiff, only to find out he didn’t like the colour after all, didn’t I?

Sigh. Rock on with your tiger feet, dudes.

  21. …while you’re at it, you could knit some for me… I don’t have ANY hand-knit socks because I’m a chicken.

And btw, I am still laughing about the public service announcement!!
