As someone from Alaska, it is interesting to see Palin thrust into national politics. One thing is for certain, she stands by what she believes. Of course, it scares the living shit out me.

I wasn’t planning on voting for her anyways…But that article brought out a lot of things that I had heard bits and pieces of. And the fact that she could become the VP or P scares me possibly even more than W! Which really terrifies me to even say!!!

  7. As a non-American viewing this circus from the other side of the globe, I have to say that American politics, with religion being such a big part of it (God bless America) and the willingness for someone to do almost whatever it takes to get rid of their enemies and obscure information to the public (that library story scares the shit out of me and don’t get me started on creationism or global warming ) makes the US look terribly similar in many aspects to some of the regimes your previous governments have put and end to or tried to do so for the sake of humanity. Strong words, I know.

Just keep in mind that whatever you do on the day of the election (and please vote) that it will affect not just you Americans, but everyone traveling with you on this dirtball through space.

    Good luck.

I saw this a couple of days ago up on Snopes. It’s been verified as being written by the person in the small town in Alaska. And I have to admit, Palin scares me silly.

Thanks for the link. Add me to the list of not voting for her. WTF was McCain thinking??? I just hope she’s scary enough that any undecideds now decide on Obama in self defense.

  21. Abbey says:

Only the dems and liberals in Alaska knew this. Because of her charisma and youth and charm, she has managed to be exceedingly popular. PLUS, we had this HORRIBLE governor before her for the previous six years. I think a pile of poo would have won the election against him. 😀 A lot of people like her, but I think a lot of people are dumb too.

Thanks for posting that letter. Palin seems like the epitome of the “mean girl” that all of us have suffered from at some point in our lives. She, as a woman, does not elicit my admiration. If that duo wins, I swear this time we really are moving to Canada!

  35. Helga says:

O.k. – the letter you linked to has been verified by snopes – YES, verified that it was WRITTEN by Anne Kilkenny – so does that automatically mean that all of her assertions are correct??? NO, NO, NO
One example is the issue of the “banned books”.
    per snopes “FALSE”
    http://www.snopes.com/politics/palin/bannedbooks.asp
Let’s be fair and objective, not blinded by party affiliation, my final suggestion!

  39. Patti says:

I just want to point out that Kilkenny’s letter doesn’t contain that list of books – that list is incorrect, but the fact that Palin tried to have books banned is *not*.

  41. Steph VW says:

As a Canadian, I have to say, American politics scare the sh*t out of me… and lately, so do Canadian politics. Our Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, (who I detest for a multitude of reasons) has recently called an election… because right now he knows that he is the best of the worst. We have 4 political parties (Liberal, Conservative, New Democratic and Green) and none of the leaders stand out from the pack as The One to lead the country. We’ll end up with another minority government and will have to suffer through another few years of Harper.

I hate the thought of voting because it feels like I’m making the wrong decision, no matter who I vote for.

Can’t we just put them all in a darkened room and throw a dart?

Don’t mind “Alexandra.” I’m ADDING you to my favorites. Everybody, including those who knit, ought to care about who’s going to be our next President. She will you know…McCain is 72 and has had cancer 3 times.

The book-banning yarn is not factual. In addition to Snopes, it’s a good idea to check the nonpartisan site FactCheck.org when deciding how much stock to place in Internet-circulating stuff. JunkScience.com is good too, when trying to decide whether the polar bear information, for example, is as simple as it first seems.

Almost every time, on any side of any issue, a letter being circulated around the Internet is full of distortion and best not forwarded unless its allegations can be verified. People’s motives are irrelevant; facts are not.

  49. Jo says:

Actually, the issue is not that she banned books, it’s that she inquired about banning books. But that’s just splitting hairs. In all seriousness, how can any freedom-loving person even *consider* banning books?! Since when is that line of thought just?

From the venerable gray lady, OH NOES:

The new mayor also tended carefully to her evangelical base. She appointed a pastor to the town planning board. And she began to eye the library. For years, social conservatives had pressed the library director to remove books they considered immoral.

“People would bring books back censored,” recalled former Mayor John Stein, Ms. Palin’s predecessor. “Pages would get marked up or torn out.”

Witnesses and contemporary news accounts say Ms. Palin asked the librarian about removing books from the shelves. The McCain-Palin presidential campaign says Ms. Palin never advocated censorship.

But in 1995, Ms. Palin, then a city councilwoman, told colleagues that she had noticed the book “Daddy’s Roommate” on the shelves and that it did not belong there, according to Ms. Chase and Mr. Stein. Ms. Chase read the book, which helps children understand homosexuality, and said it was inoffensive; she suggested that Ms. Palin read it.

“Sarah said she didn’t need to read that stuff,” Ms. Chase said. “It was disturbing that someone would be willing to remove a book from the library and she didn’t even read it.”

“I’m still proud of Sarah,” she added, “but she scares the bejeebers out of me.”
