Replacement parts

The box of yarn that went astray during the move had more than just the Rowan Wool Cotton intended for Kyoto and a couple of skeins of Kureyon in it. It also had both of my little bags of knitting tools. You know…tapestry needles, crochet hooks, tape measures, stitch markers and holders, my little memo pad with pattern changes, row counters, etc etc.

Last night I finished a Koigu sock and realized I had no needle to graft the toe with. It was time to move on and stop longing for those lost tools… Today I finally accepted that the box was indeed gone forever. No amount of bitching or bemoaning was going to lure it to my doorstep. Except for the crochet hooks, which had belonged to my grandmother, everything in the box was completely replaceable. So that’s what I’ve started doing. I reordered the yarn today, and picked up a crochet hook (for dropped stitches only. No crochet for me, thanks), a row counter, and a couple of tapestry needles.

It hurt to pay for that Rowan a second time, but if that’s the worst that happened over the course of our move, I got off lucky. As I said to Andrea today, at least the dogs are safe and my Addis weren’t lost. (Sadie DID manage a rather spectacular escape, actually, that ended with her being chased down and tackled by our dashing locksmith, who was in the Israeli army before being our locksmith. It’s a long story. Suffice it to say, it was scary but everyone is okay.)

Knitting Tuesday, abridged version, is on for tomorrow. That is, just Andrea and Em coming by, rather than the full group. I figured I’d limit the number of people forced to knit on folding chairs. The full group will hopefully reconvene once we have actual furniture again.

  1. That is a drag that a knitting box was lost. I’m glad most of the stuff is replaceable. It’s true that it could’ve been worse — did you read that Carolyn (girlreaction) lost her box of Xmas ornaments and nativity set in her move? Heartbreaking.

Re: your dashing locksmith. Was he handsome or did he literally dash after Sadie? Or both? Ah, the ambiguous adjective…

  2. dude, i FEEL your PAIN. every day i think of a new thing that was in my box that’s lost. and then last night I had a major freakout and thought some other stuff was missing but phew turned out that was just my brain malfunctioning. but you know there’s only so much shit you can actually keep with you personally during a move. i came with an entire trunk full of stuff to chicago, what else could i do. (btw, my dad writes novels. he lost the box with ALL COPIES of novel #2 last time they moved. and they moved themselves, with help of course. it’s GONE. he cannot figure it out. how horrible!!)

  4. A former member of the Israeli army? Mmmmmm. I’m guessing “dashing” means both quick AND handsome.

Can’t wait to see you tonight!

  5. UGH! If I lost my Addis or my Britneys(I have never used them, but they are beautiful) I would just die! At least the pups are intact and happy!

  6. Yes, he was quick on his feet. He was also beautiful. Ridiculously so. Not what you expect to turn up on your doorstep when you make an appointment with a locksmith. Not that I’m complaining. 😉

  7. It’s true: there’s something surprising about a handsome locksmith. Why is that? Why shouldn’t a dashing young man (in all senses) turn to the lock arts? Hope you three had fun at your mini knitting group!

  8. I’m gonna lose my keys today and see what kind of locksmith I get. Just saw RotK last night, and I want a Viggo-ish locksmith. Can I order one like that?

Hope you had a blast last night knittin’ and that you have fun tonight! Happy New Year, doll. xox

  9. Oy! That hurts. In our move we lost a few things too, including the dress that I wore when leaving my wedding (not my wedding dress thank goodness!) I *really* liked that dress. So sorry to hear about your missing yarn and tools!

  10. That sucks about losing knitting stuff. Definitely re-buy the missing tools, but get even nicer stuff this time!
