So…root canal

Yep. My first root canal (and hopefully my last). I feel like such a grown-up. I take small comfort in the fact that I couldn’t have prevented it, really. The broken filling was an invitation to bacteria. (Yum. Doesn’t that just make your skin crawl?) The poor tooth didn’t stand a chance and now the nerves are dead and gone. I’ve got a temporary filling in there and go back in a couple weeks for a crown. My dentist said, “Welcome to the world of major dentistry.” Great. They say you lose one tooth for each pregnancy, anyway. I should have expected this. I had a lot of trouble with my gums during the pregnancy, including a pregnancy tumor the size of a grape that had to be removed by this same dentist.

In other news, meh. I seem to have lost my blogging juice. What did I used to talk about? There are things I could show you. Roving and knitting and all that. But I never remember to take the photos when I have the chance. I only remember when I’m nursing (like right now).

Thumper’s donkey jacket is closing in on done but, as with so many Debbie Bliss baby patterns, it’s huge. Why do I never remember to check the schematics on her patterns before choosing what size to knit? I’m getting gauge on the 12-month size and it will fit him when he’s five. So I’m thinking since he won’t be wearing it this year I’ll set it aside for a bit and start my Equinox Pullover.

Oh…and the two socks knit at once, one inside the other, double-knitting thing? Once it got easy, it got tedious and slow and boring, so I took the outside sock off the needles and frogged it and am now just knitting the inside sock as a plain st st rolltop, my usual default sock. I work a round every three days, so those should be done in a year or two.

Yeah. I’ve got a bit of grumpiness going on. Waiting to hear from my agent. Gah. She’s got the revised draft and I’m waiting to hear if she thinks it’s ready to go back out or if I need to tinker under the hood some more.

And my mouth still kinda hurts.

Harrumph.

  2. It is because she often doesn’t HAVE schematics.

Sympathetic wince re: tooth troubles. Note to self – floss tonight.

  3. Yuck in the root canal. I only need to have 5 fillings re-done after the first pregnancy. Who knew it was so hard on a woman’s teeth?

  4. Grump away! Everyone gets like that now and again. Maybe you can enjoy it for a bit, play with it. It’s so much easier to laugh it away once you’ve gotten down and dirty with your grumps.

I use the nickname grumpleupagus (as in Snuffleupagus) for grumpy family members.

  9. I also had pregnancy-related tooth troubles (and skin issues too!). I’m sorry you’re uncomfortable. Hopefully, your discomfort will be behind you soon and you’ll get good news from your agent. Can we have a muffin date one of these days? It might be tough for me to get out to brooklyn on a weekday now that i’m a one-woman show, but I’ll figure something out. Mwah!

  10. Blogging juice:
    * What tools do you love to use that aren’t typical knitting tools.
    * If you could have a 3-day weekend focused on knitting, what would it include?
    * What teachers would you most like to sit down with and why
    * Grab a recent knitting magazine. What patterns appeal to you? Which ones do you find unappealing (understanding that some may love them and not disparaging the designer)
    * What knitting books do you keep reaching for?
    * Don’t write. Just snap pictures of random knitty stuff and post them. Let us all comment and ask questions.
    * Blogging. What do you find interesting when you read other’s blogs? What makes you subscribe to one and not another?

There…now go write and snap 🙂

  11. I’m going to the endodontist at 2.15 today for my root canal. My regular dentist, could not for the life of her get my tooth numb. At all. 5 extremely large shots of novacaine did nothing. I know your pain.

  12. Ouch. I’m wincing on your behalf even as I avoid making a dental appointment.

Debbie Bliss only started including schematics recently…and she designs things big for kids.

  13. eep! perhaps i should make a dentist appointment.

you could always post pictures of thumper. if you are like me, there are hoards on your computer.

i had root canal in university thanks to a drinking-related incident. (note to self, dancing and drinking out of a beer mug to not mix.) anyway, my tooth was dead dead dead and absessed by the time i was in enough pain to do anything about it. the root canal itself didn’t hurt, it was just tideous. i didn’t even get any freezing.

hopefully yours is also pain-free and quick!

  21. I had dental implants done – way way nicer than root canal. I’d had root canal done on the one tooth to save it 10 years ago, but it started discolouring and really behaving badly so it’s out and I have an implant in progress. The other implant took the place of a baby tooth which never came out. I can’t say how pleased I am with the implants. If I had the option of another root canal over an implant I’d definitely go with the implant! Good luck with it 🙂

  22. I’ve been really grumpy lately too. And I don’t even have a tooth problems to blame it on. I hope you’ll be feeling better soon. In the meantime, try to do something nice for yourself, even if it’s just a bath.

  24. the root canal really will help, and if the infection is all cleared up it will numb up perfectly, if there is infection though it will hurt like hell

  29. I’d ruffle your hair and give you a chuck under the chin, but that would probably hurt like holy hell right now. (Plus last time I was close enough to ruffle your hair, you hit me.) 🙂

Don’t worry about the blogging juice. Most of the folks who read your blog ain’t going anywhere. Just let us know that you’re alive once in a while. It’ll come when it’s time.

  30. Don’t worry about the loss of your blogging juice, root canals (and other major dentistry) will do that to you. I’ve had more than I can count, so I speak from experience! I hope you feel better soon!

  33. Awww, all my sympathies for the tooth troubles. I’ve never had a root canal so I guess I’m not really grown up (I’m 57). I always assumed the lose-a-tooth-for-each-pregnancy was a myth from the days when women maybe didn’t get enough calcium. But who knows? Throw us a few Thumper cuteness pictures whenever your blogging mojo goes west and we’ll be happy. Nothing like cute baby pictures (are there any other kind?) if there’s no yarn porn to be seen.

  39. Tooth and gum trouble was my number one pregnancy surprise. *Nothing* I’d read mentioned it. Sorry to hear yours ended in root canal. 🙁

Thumper will be a completely adorable 2,3,4, or 5 year old in the donkey jacket! And you can always talk about him when your knitting doesn’t inspire you to write–there’s nothing like a completely adorable baby to make us go “Awwwwwww” and grin like fools.

I’m impressed that you’re knitting for him. It makes me feel like a bad knitter/mother somehow, but I really haven’t got much urge to knit for Jacob, myself. Maybe it’s the dismay of watching him outgrow 5 sizes in 16 months?

  40. I just finished my only two-at-a-time socks ever, and I’ll never do it again. Meh. Give me one sock at a time.

I don’t have anything to write, either. I’m not good at commenting, either, apparently. So mwah. That is all.

  41. Hold up. Pregnancy tumor in your mouth? The hell?

I think a cloud of general malaise has stationed itself over Brooklyn and parts of Queens, because everyone I know in this area, including myself, are just feeling schmeh.
