Subsistence knitting
We’re set to move in less than two weeks now. We have to have work done on the place that’s easier done with no furniture in the way, but we need to move in right away, so for the first several weeks to a month, all of our things will be in storage, except for what we absolutely need to live in the house during that time–a bed (we’re getting a new mattress! yippee! badly needed), some clothes, the microwave and toaster, the tea kettle, my iMac, no more than ten books, and a reasonable amount of knitting. No furniture. No tv or stereo (though the iMac/iPod combo take care of that nicely). No chairs or table. Well, maybe we should take a couple of chairs…we’re still figuring out what to set aside to keep with us and what to have the movers take away to storage. (For example, it just occured to me today that we have to bring some lamps with us, or we’ll be sitting in the dark. Not sure how much light those 100-yr-old sconces throw off, but I bet it won’t be enough to read by. Maybe just enough to avoid stubbed toes and barked shins.)
Here’s the tough part–deciding what knitting and what stash contents to keep with me and what to pack away. I’ve already decided to send the wheel to storage, so the roving can get packed away as well. But as far as yarn goes…I’m torn. I could just keep the WIPS with me, but then what if inspiration strikes? What will I do without a stash to paw through? I know. This should be my biggest problem, right? (Don’t worry. It isn’t. Wouldn’t that be nice if it was?)
So maybe I take the WIPs plus yarn for two more projects on my Waiting in the Wings list? Of course, there’s the secret bonus answer, which is “oh, dear, I’ll just be forced to buy yarn, with no stash to turn to.” Hmmm…I like that option, actually.
Don’t mind me. This entire post is me thinking out loud.
Knitting, you ask? Well, didn’t knit a stitch today. I’ve got a deadline on Friday, another on Monday, and then just school work and writing and house stuff to worry about. So hopefully some knitting progress and subsequent news after this weekend.
Moving in less than two weeks! How exciting! And you need to set yourself up for about a month, you say? Hmmm. Yeah, two WIPs, supplies for two WITWs, and an option to shop for more — that should do it. You know, I’d be happy to look after your stash for a month. Are you sure you want to put your beautiful yarn into a musty old storage space? Reeeally? I’m just thinking of what’s best for YOU, Cari.

I would just like to point out that I am geographically closer than Alison, should you need extra space for your yarn stash. Heh. I think your plan is a good one, Cari. You should definitely buy more yarn, though, in celebration of moving into a new place. Baptize your home with yarn. Yeah.

You can certainly leave absolutely anything you’d like in my office. Now that I have snuck a (small) amount of the ungodly secret stash home, there is room for any goodies you want to leave. It’d be like yarn daycare–lots of other skeins for yours to play with, no pesky moths, etc.

You’re moving soon! How exciting! But having things in storage…yikes. I’ve had most of my house goods in storage for, oh, the past three years. Sob! It makes you appreciate your possesions more 🙂 Have a good one!
Knitting, knitting…oh, dear. I’m an evil enabler. I say, take just one or two and replenish the stash if necessary 🙂
