The best knit plans…

Remember this sweater? It’s the 12-month size, but I figured Thumper would wear it this winter, around six months.

Well..he’ll be three months old on the 14th.

I don’t think this sweater will fit come winter.

Ditto for the Baby Yoda Sweater.

He’s already, sadly, outgrown the sweater Alison knit for him. I think the one Andrea made will be the right size come December…but that leaves him with just one sweater. And the child of a knitter surely needs more than one sweater.

The lining of the donkey jacket is nearly done. (Pictures soon, I promise.) Once that’s done, I’m thinking I’ll either knit ChildHood or Accordion, or both. And maybe a raglan cardi. Stephanie sent me some fantastic monkey buttons that I’m itching to use…

  1. Oh my! He looks like the poster child for what beautiful, happy, HEALTHY babies should look like! Nice work! (Oh-nice work on the sweaters, too!!!!) My little babboo (now 8) was a preemie- and at 3 months was still wearing Cabbage Patch doll clothes. So you know how lucky you are!

  2. Hee.
He looks wonderful and healthy and gorgeous. Maybe if you make the 24 month size he’ll have enough time to wear it twice before he shoots right by it?

  3. Oh, Cari: he’s just squeezable. I can’t believe i haven’t squeezed him yet. I promise to be gentle. Really, he’s just so friggin’ adorable!!!!

  4. He’s so big and healthy! At least the weather has turned and he can get a bit of wear out of these.

  5. Oh my gosh, he is SO cute and healthy looking. The sweaters are very cute on him, too. I’m sure that he’ll come into more sweaters, maybe from some knitterly friends.

  6. He is so handsome! I knit my kids a lot of neckdown raglans – fast, cute and they got tons of wear out of them. Donkey sweater is sweet on him with that belly. 🙂

  7. Look at the belly on him! Adorable! heh Maybe you’ll be surprised and the sweaters will fit longer than you think. Hopefully the growth explosion will start slowing down (it’s supposed to!) and you’ll enjoy these sweaters on him this winter. 🙂

  15. The little man could get a months wear out of those sweaters yet. Hmm, probably took at least that long to knit them. 🙂

  16. I love the expressions he has in the pictures. Like he’s kinda digging the attention but isn’t too sure of that little metal box with the flashy thing.

    My god, he’s adorable.

  17. SIGH, have been there and done that. Lil bit Shot really fast the first few months. She is 17 months, and I am getting ready to put her into 24 month sizes. With her, she has been fitting a pattern… will fit into the next size right around when she is “suposed” to fit into the first size. So I am actually able to plan ahead now!

  18. Hey, he makes a great model! I have a freakishly large nephew (37″ and 31 lbs at 18 mo) and more than a few of my lovingly knit sweaters were just put on him for a picture in warm weather because between when I cast on and when he got it he grew out of it.

I’m convinced we create good mojo for them when we knit for them though. Even if they don’t really get to wear it.

Big, loud kisses on Thumper’s forhead!

  23. I think I speak for knitters and baby admirers everywhere when I say HOLY CRAP!
Is Thumper part mountain gorilla? He’s huge!
    (And very well atired!)

  24. That boy is clearly getting too many carbs. I think you should put him on a diet….or on a bicycle. LOL. Oh, I kill myself sometimes.

  25. Damn those babies for growing – how dare they??!! Love the Accordian pattern by the way.

And there’s always No. 2, or 3, or 4….for wearing the jumpers. (ducking now as I see a shoe coming across the ocean).

  27. first of all, that has to be a photo of the cutest baby in the world right now. second, in the photos he almost looks mischievous, as if he knows he’s foiled your prior knitting plans! i can’t believe the difference from the pic taken in july!

  33. Must be the vegetarian diet. Good thing he waited to come out before getting that huge! Ugh, sorry, I’m so crass.

Better move up to toddler sizes, eh? Here’s hoping that will last him until at least February.

(love the socks and trousers, btw)

  37. What a great big happy boy! I love a big baby. They grow like weeds. You’ll have to knit your arms off to keep your healthy growing baby in sweaters.

  38. dude. of the 45 children on my list, only ONE of those was ever able to wear anything sized 0-3 or 3-6. and she was premature. i think baby sizing is still based on when we were little and babies weren’t all coming out 8 pounds or more.

  39. Hey, we have those socks too!! But we always mismatch the colors (like father, like son).

    Thumper looks great!!

  49. The baby that ate Brooklyn (talked to Michelle just after she saw you last week)….

And oh MAN does he look like Daddy, huh? Like you, too, in the lips, but right now those eyes are Daddy’s. What a gorgeous little chap. (The baby, although the daddy is cute, too. You know what I mean.)

  50. Thumper looks so adorable in those sweaters; he’s getting so big so fast!

I finished the Baby Yoda sweater a while ago, but so far only a stuffed animal to model it. It was a very easy, fun pattern, thank you!

My own friends , who are vegan, had a baby 5 weeks ago, and I am here to tell you, that baby is HUGE. OMG, she has grown into and out of everything as fast as I can knit !
    Congrats, he looks AWESOME.

  62. Sadly, I too have had the baby sweater revelation. Alex wore the expensive bamboo sweater right from birth, and the striped highland wool sweater is too small already, and it’s not cool enought to wear yet. to top that off, he’s alergic to wool!! first the milk, now the wool. what more can this child of a knitter take from said knitter, i ask you?

  63. Thumper is so cute in the Baby Yoda sweater! I am a relatively new knitter, and I want to make Baby Yoda for my friends who are having babies, but I’d like to make it bigger–as a new knitter, I’m not sure how to adjust the pattern to get a larger size. Any advice would be much appreciated.

  64. Do you have a pattern for the first one (non-yoda)? I’m also confused because I was trying to knit the yoda one and it was coming out waaaay too small.

  65. I feel your pain. My 4 month old daughter (who looks about your son’s size) is also wearing 12 month clothes…and has outgrown all of the sweaters I knit her while pregnant…before it’s even cold enough to try them on. I have a 3 year old who does the same thing. I’m about to just knit teenager sized sweaters and wait…
