Thumper’s guided tour of the ducks of Brooklyn

Hello, dear people. Thumper Dogsstealyarn, Esq. here.

I heard a rumor that a certain nomadic knitter was in town today, but alas my mother decided that it would be too much excitement for me. Too much excitement! As if such a thing were possible?! Am I not a wonder baby, after all? Do I not win hearts and minds each time I ride the Q train? Surely I’m capable of winning the hearts and minds of an auditorium full of knitters! But my mother thought otherwise. Do you know what she said? She said, “Sweet Thumper, I know you really wanted to go drool on Stephanie some more, but we’re really much better off staying home this evening. How about a walk in the park instead?”

As if a walk in Prospect Park could possibly measure up to an evening with my beloved birthday twin? I think not. But I didn’t want to hurt Mommy’s feelings, so I went to the park with her. And I thought, if we’re going to the park, we might as well make it an educational experience for you dear readers.

And so, I, Thumper, humbly present to you:

How to Find Ducks in Brooklyn

Step 1: Get dressed up in your outside-going gear.

Step 2: Go outside and have the mommy or whoever is carrying you walk toward the park

Step 3: Follow the duckprints

Step 4: Go through the spooky tunnel and make hooting noises to hear the echo.

Step 5: See ducks

And that’s really all there is to it. It’s tiring work, sure, but not very complicated.

On the way home we saw some New York snow. Mommy says she won’t miss it.

I still think we should have gone to see the Harlot. I love the Harlot.

  1. Don’t worry, Thumper! The snow will come back, and so will the Harlot. Ducks are cool, too.

  2. So close and yet so far. Thumper – you’re not the only one wishing you were at FIT tonight. But I’m sure when Mommy gets her copy of Harlot’s new book, she’ll read it to you each night. I’m glad you got to go see the ducks (and dirty snow) today and thanks for sharing with us.

  7. That’s one gorgeous kid!

Thanks for the instructions, but it’s so hard to get anyone to agree to carry me anywhere.

  8. Perhaps Thumper could come and conduct a tour or Morningside Park, we have ducks and geese! Oh, I didn’t see the Harlot either. Somebody had to take up space at Starbucks. Stitch, stitch, sip, sip.

  9. Thumper, I suggest that you ask your mother to read passages from one of Stephanie’s lovely books to you. In the meantime, walks in parks with ducks are lovely! Fresh air is good for little thumpers, after all.

  10. The Harlot is great………….. she lives in a very snowy place! Looks like you enjoyed the ducks, so maybe your mom will let you vist them again soon!!

  11. Awwwwwwww, Thumper is looking so big — more and more “little boy” and less “baby” everytime I see him here. 🙂

  12. Alas.. even though we’ve never met, and although I never would have introduced myself. I did go to FIT, and I did look for a certain mom & her Thumper. Just ’cause I read your blog, and find it terribly charming. Mrs. Harlot was wonderful, as was the bonus needles & yarn for charity afghan squares. I’ve never knitted with a wool/soy blend before, but I’m halfway done with my square.

There was this wonderful moment when Stephanie first came out, and the woman behind me gasped, “She’s wearing her Bohus!”.

Maybe because it made me gasp a little, too.

  13. Seconding trip to Boston suggestion where there are ducks AND swans. Well, not real swans but very big ones who will peddle you about on the duck pond. And, don’t you just love baby feet with their pudgy flat bottoms? The feet only shape up when walking starts.

You are quite the chameleon; one day you look like your mother and the next you look like your father.
