transit strike, day two

I’m not feeling trapped at home yet, but if the strike goes on much longer I anticipate a bit of cabin fever setting in. Luckily I have handknit socks to soothe the sting. Look what Monica made me!
giftsocks.jpg

They’re beautifully made and very comfortable. And they fit perfectly! Thanks again, Monica. I really love them.

(And that bit of fluff on the toe isn’t part of the socks. It’s…um…part of my floor, I guess. Or was on the floor until it decided to hitch a ride on my sock. I didn’t notice until Billy the Sock Photographer had already rolled out of here on his bike, so the photo with evidence of floor fluff will just have to do.)

By the way, the cravings have shifted. Orange juice was SO first trimester. Over it. Now it’s all about pineapple juice and apple cider. No, not together. And knishes (spinach potato knishes. mmmm) with fresh saurkraut. And salty potatoes in all forms. And tostones. TOSTONES!!! Oh…and here’s a weird one. Today I’m dying for some jelly beans. Hunh? Who ever actually, specifically wants jelly beans? Let’s hope I’m not carrying the next incarnation of Reagan here. Isn’t it a little sad that I associate jelly beans with our former evil emperor? And isn’t it sadder that Bush has made Reagan look a little less evil in retrospect? But anyway… jelly beans. The point is I really want some jelly beans. Let’s hope Billy remembers them on his way home. Let’s all think thoughts of jelly beans and direct them toward Billy as he rides his bike through the gridlock that is now our fair city, shall we?

Jelly beans….jelly beans…. Ooh! And maybe some french fries? Jelly beans…Jelly beans…

  2. i’ll send billy telepathic jelly bean vibes. your cravings make perfect sense to me. i think i told you that for me, it was all about vinegar, salt and citrus. you’re lucky to have billy (for myriad reasons, of course, but for now I’m referring specifically to the fact that he will go out and acquire that which you crave).

the socks are WONDERFUL! what a swell gift!

  3. Those are some gorgeous socks! Mmmm, jelly beans. Jelly Belly are the best, of course. I sure hope Billy doesn’t forget them, or you might go all hormonal on his ass?

  4. Mmmmmm Jelly Beans.

What I wanted most was a McDonald’s Apple Pie, but fried like they used to be, not baked (that’s for wussies, not pregnant chicks). If it was boiled in oil, I craved it.

  5. Yes jelly beans all year round. I’m one of the odd ducks who likes the regular ones sold around Easter and not the spicy ones. What no Pull ‘n Peel red licorice? I never run out. And french fries with gravy and chocolate milk with ice. No I’m not pregnant. Are you kidding? Spayed at 29 and now 64 but I still have food cravings.

  6. Maybe all the Moms in the audience should all send Cari some care packages with our favorite pregnancy craving foods. I mean – the poor girl is stuck in her apartment with food cravings…that’s pathetic folks & I think we ought to help. If her hormones get out of control & she isn’t fed there’s no telling what may happen!!

  7. Hey Cari, What sock pattern is that? Looks pretty much like one I’m about to make. Just curious. I laughed out loud when you said, “isn’t it sadder that Bush has made rEagan look a little less evil in retrospect”. Wow, isn’t that the truth. On another topic, when do you guys find out the gender?

  8. Beautiful socks!

MMMMmmm…tostones…crunchy, perfectly smashed and golden fried tostones. Oh, how I miss tostones. *Drool*

  9. Jelly beans, huh? My big thing was Greek salad – but they won’t let you eat feta anymore, right?

  10. Your new socks are so beautiful! What a great friend you have.

I hear you on the cravings. Orange juice is okay… but I, too, like the salty potato products. Sweets, too, though. Weird. I got to hear the baby’s heartbeat for the first time on Monday. That was cool. Things are getting more and more real. I have a little bump now.

I hope you get your jelly beans! 🙂

Yum, tater tots and jelly beans! With apple cider. You’re making me have cravings. 😉

  22. Are you worried that you’re going to start craving meat? I’ve heard from multiple people who used to be veggie that they gave it up when they were pregnant because they just wanted the meat. Not that it’s even close to your biggest concern right now but it’s something that worries me when I think aoubt if (and that’s a big if) I ever decided to get preggers.

That looks like the socks from the new Knitty, yes? If so, girl’s got some sock speed on her.

  23. Gorgeous socks! With my first pregnancy I had, just once, and intense craving for 2 minute noodles. We don’t eat 2 minute noodles so we made a special shopping expidition and as far as we could tell pretty much the only thing in them was MSG. Who craves MSG? How could that possibly be good? I bought them and tried not to eat them for days but in the end I caved and instantly felt better. And haven’t eaten them since (4 yrs and counting). Listen to your cravings I reckon.

  24. the socks are great. i love the color.
cravings are fun. jelly beans sound good….so does a knish….so does french fries…. 🙂 (after a lifetime of frozen meals (celeste pizzas, lean cuisine, etc..)i craved real food- real food preferably cooked by my lovely husband.)
btw- i’m with you. every time i buy jelly beans (which is probably more often than i should admit) i think of our former president.

  25. Yes, those socks are absolutely amazing. LOL! I always check for lint, fuzz, dirt, etc when I’m doing blog photos.

  26. I froze raspberry juice into popsicles – I ate so many of them, I killed the center of my tongue with the cold. Temporarily, anyway. I had a dark place, almost black, right in the center. Immediately after kidlet’s birth, I didn’t care a bit about them anymore. Very very strange, pregnancy is.

  27. Bush makes Reagan look a little less evil?? Cripes, I would take Reagan with late-stage Alzheimer’s over W. *sigh*

The socks look great! You’re such a fast knitter! I wish I could crank out the socks like that!

BTW, coconut jelly beans and cherry swedish fish. now that’s a good pregnancy craving!

  28. Didja ever hear that your child will come out looking like whatever food you crave the most? Luckily, jelly beans are cute.

Take a wild guess as to why we used to call Cheb “Tomato Baby.”

  29. Pregnancy food cravings are the most bizarre thing, and its one of those things you don’t believe until it happens to you. I remember going hysterical at Dairy Queen when I was pregnant because they were out of malt and couldn’t make my sundae that I craved (3+ times a week..) I’ve never touched a sundae with malt since. I also ate nothing but curried foods (the hotter the better) for 6 months of my pregnancy .. I’m surprised my son wasn’t born yellow from all the tumeric I consumed.

  30. Mmmm, Jelly Beans…but not just any would do for me. Jelly Bellys are soooo superior! Love the socks, curious about what pattern she used!

  31. I’ve got you beat on the cravings….with my first daughter, one day I craved mustard. Just plain old yellow mustard. I couldn’t stop thinking about it so finally I went home and made a ham sandwich, smothered in mustard. Evidently that’s all I needed!

  32. Pina Colada jelly beans. Mmmmm. Trader Joe’s has the real Jelly Bellys. They are probably closed now…..

  34. Krispy Kreme donuts, plain glazed. I could eat a dozen at one sitting. Or a pound of jelly beans. Or a box of Girl Scout cookies. I couldn’t stop. I gained 60 pounds. It took me a year after the baby was born to lose it all, but it came off (yay for breastfeeding!). So be careful…you could be on your way to 60 pounds!

  36. Why did you have to go and suggest French Fries?!? Yesterday at the office lunch, my colleague had fries with his meal and I was eating my salad (like a good preggy lady) and drooling. Sadly he was not the kind of colleague who would let me steal one, since we all know stolen fries are That Much Better. I am STILL craving them. Now I have to think up where I can get good fries for lunch… hmmmm…

My other cravings BTW are now Italian Food. Pasta! Rigatoni with heaps of tomato sauce and cheese. Lasagna. Ravioli. All of it, makes me crazy!

  53. I’m not sure what it says about me, but I had to google tostones and knishes. (I knew what the ingredients were, just not the names!)

I hope the jelly beans made their way to you last night! At one point in my training I read a paper about how moms who ate copious ammounts of carrots while pregnant had babies who preferred breastmilk from the moms who had eatten carrots. They proved that the baby could have “tasted” in utero.

(just goes to prove that you have a smart baby – craving such interesting (yet possibly hard to find) food items!)

I thought you might find this interesting: I had never read your blog, but reading the Divine Miss Em’s blog I saw your comment re the TWU strike and came to your blog wanting to read what a fellow NYer had to say. I soon as your page comes up, I say to myself “Oh, look, there’s Diego!!” Now I had to read back to ascertain your dog’s name. I don’t know how I new the dog’s name,if in fact the “slender” one is Diego.

Of course, now I am hooked on your blog and will be part of my regular blog reading. As for your pregnancy, cravings, having to give up control, etc.: you ain’t seen nothing yet.

    Good luck kiddo!!!
