Um…a few things…

1. Marrije is teaching me to curse in Dutch. The Dutch are apparently masters of profanity. The best so far? Lul de behanger. I won’t tell you what it means because I don’t want to attract Google searches any stranger than those I already get. Go ask a Dutch person. It’s really damn funny.

2. I ventured into Chicago yesterday to hang out with my darling Carolyn and my formerly imaginary friend Pippy. Pippy exists in the real world! And she’s super cute, as one might have expected. And you already knew how cute Carolyn is, so… I didn’t take any pictures. I’m a crappy blogger. I think I’ve already lowered your expectations enough that you won’t hold this against me, though. We ate food. We looked at yarn. We looked at Carolyn’s high school memory books… (Holy crap, the eighties hair! The big glasses!) I did buy a bit of yarn. One skein of Jade Sapphire Mongolian Cashmere, 2-ply, in the Silver Fern colorway. I’ve been ogling this stuff for a long time, but this color was too good to pass by. A photo would be good, right? Not today. Soon. I think I’ll make some kind of lacy scarf with it. Any ideas?

I…uh…also bought a set of dpns. I know. I don’t use dpns. I’m socks on two circs girl. But I want to be able to knit socks on the flight home in November, and if security makes me leave my knitting behind, I sure as hell am not tossing two pairs of Addis. So I picked up a set of Size 0 Crystal Palace bamboo toothpicks. I’ve actually never used dpns, so that’ll be an adventure of sorts.

3. Oh yeah… and Dream Agent said yes. The book will start to go out to editors next week. Or rather, this coming week. Eek!

  1. I have to admit that I tried to Babelfish your dutch profanity and came up with nothing. I’m always intrigued by languages and Dutch is one that I have zero experience with, aside from several flights in/out of Amsterdam. Congrats on Dream Agent and Good News re: going out to editors! Can’t wait to read your book!

  2. great news about your book, Cari! also, WRT Silver Fern, I bought that color last year at Stitches and made an incredible beaded scarf out of it – nothing lacy, just very ribby – and beady – it is a fabulous color – there must be some kind of “fern” lace pattern out there in the cyberworld.
    best to you!

  7. . . . so apparently, paper-hanging is a very disagreeable profession in the Netherlands?

Congrats on landing the Dream Agent.
    Dream Agent,
    Dream Agent,
    Will you be mine . . .

I am bummed that I’m not going to get to see you at Ragdale. 🙁

  12. Woot, woot! Big mazel-tov to you!

And oh my, that’s just too funny and filthy.

I would bet that circs would cause less trouble on an airline than DPNs, which always seem dangerous to me in the itsy bitsy sizes. I’ve always flown with circs and had no problems whatsoever. Denise circs, though, so I didn’t have much to lose.

  13. congrats congrats congrats! I hope your days are less rainy then they are here and wish you luck with the dpn’s; after a few adjustment rows the flow really does take over.

I didn’t realize you are close to Chicago. Which yarn shop(s) did you visit?

Enjoy the rest of your time!

  37. Dream agent said yes, eh? Info cleverly tucked at the END of your post as if you are rubbing your literary little toe in the dust, looking bashful.

HOT DAMN, GIRL — this is news to celebrate. If you were a dog you’d be opening Dom Perignon — oops, I forgot you need opposable thumbs to work the corkscrew. Well, okay, you’d be drinking out of the toilet. Here’s to you — SLURP.

And you’d be wagging your tail. Very fast. WOO HOO.

  65. Congrats Cari! So happy for you.

Casting on with dpn’s is a particular pain in the ass, in my opinion. I recommend getting your sock started with 2 circ’s, then do the switcheroo to avoid the need for cursing in any language.

  72. Congrats on the book work!

BTW, I bought a pair of teak, size 10.5 (US), 14″ long knitting needles during my recent Canada trip. These buggers have the mother of all extreme-pointed ends on them. I really thought TSA at Customs was going to yank them from me, but they didn’t… The flight crew didn’t even blink when I pulled out my laceweight cashmere yarn and knit the 3-hour ride home on my lace muffler. Plus, I saw several women with DPNs of various sizes and shapes, as well as Clover and Addi circs. Print out the TSA allowable sheet and take it with you (http://www.tsa.gov/public/interapp/editorial/editorial_1012.xml), but I don’t anticipate you having one wit of difficulty with your knitting supplies – just don’t take pointy scissors.
