We went strawberry picking this weekend

That, my friends, is 31 pounds of Hood River strawberries. What the hell did we do with 31 pounds of strawberries? (And arguably the best strawberries on the planet, no less. If you’re planning to visit Oregon, try to time it for when the Hoods are in season. Yes, they’re really that good.) The adventures continue on the Eating Well on $50 a Week blog.

make jam; that’s what my mum used to do if we managed to get home without eating them all.

Actually, I like Shuksans better, but nobody grows them anymore. Hoods are great tho. Make jam

I would make at least once batch of strawberry sorbet or ice cream. And probably some shortcake. And there is also chilled strawberry soup! And of course jam… which you can can in ball jars and give everyone as presents.

I agree 100%, Hoods are the best of all the berries. However after picking berries for 3 years as a teen to earn money for college, I buy mine at a roadside stand now 😉

It is good to have Hoods back, they were gone for many years, I *think* due to a blight or something with the plants.

  5. They look luscious. Thumper is so cute!

I don’t know if it is my computer (although nothing else does this)but I am getting a very weird version of your blog-font is huge and lots of blank space.

  7. Cathy says:

Lee, it’s not just you. Huge text and lots of blank space.

As for strawberries, I go with the crowd–make jam. It’s awesome.

that’s a lot of beautiful jam – you can send them right over to HK. I miss homemade 🙁

You can still use the “syrup” on toast and better yet…angel food cake or pound cake! Yum!

You should grab some cherries for some canning too. They don’t have natural pectin either and they are so sweet I’m thinking about trying a cherry salsa this year.

But since the first year I did this, and made too much like you said you did, I started giving it away as Christmas gifts and everyone loves them. They fight over them and I get in trouble when I try to skip the tradition. Just think, a loaf of your homemade bread or a homemade angel food cake and a jar of strawberry goodness. That is love.

They are a little heavy to send to folks but still worth it!

Just wanted to let you know that your format is all better now! Whatever you did to fix it, thanks!

Hey! We went strawberry picking as well on Sunday. Wish I could tell you something great to do with all of them. We just figured we would share with neighbors.
