We’re here!
…but we won’t have internet at home until Thursday and settling into a new city with a baby means I can’t really lounge around a cafe soaking up the free wifi. So here I am stealing five minutes in a cafe, grabbing just a wee bit of wifi to say hi to you. I’ll be back Thursday, Qwest dsl allowing, and I’ll bring you up to date on the post-Texas leg of the road trip and our new house and how much we love Portland, etc etc etc.
Until then…
Wow… That seems so fast! I’m sure it doesn’t seem fast with a dog and a baby in a car, but it seems to me like you just got on the road…
Posted by: Anne
So glad to hear that you got there safe!! I’m excited that I’m the 2nd one to comment here. it’s the first time ever. Squeeze Thumper for all of us here in New England, and have a great time settling in.

Portland seems really, really nice. I watched a video about the bicycle-friendliness of the place and sighed.

Welcome to Oregon! I’ve been keeping track of your posts and am glad you’ve made it safe and sound. It must be such a relief! And look, you’ve come into the rain already, lol. (It seems early this year). Here’s to your new digs!

Welcome to the PNW! I’m heading down to Portland on Friday to go to OFFF. I’m sure you’ll be busy settling in and unpacking but I’d love to meet you if you’re planning on going.

You’re in a cafe in Portland at 10:08 pm? Where is this magical place? We just moved to NE PDX two months ago and have a minor freak out when we find a cafe with wifi open past 6! There were at least a few places open until 10 when we lived in SE… but not many open past that (this is the one thing I can’t get over in moving from a bigger city to Portland…. late night work sessions at cafes!)
I digress. Welcome to town! Today’s weather is a good taste of what the rest of fall will be like—crisp, overcast in the morning, with a gorgeous sunset by the end of the day.
Posted by: Amy
Wow! That seems fast to me, too. Welcome to your new home – woohoo!
Posted by: Lizbon
That was a very fast cross country venture! Good luck settling into your house, neighborhood and life!
Posted by: Debbie
wow you are already there… loving it and getting the start of PNW fall… am jealous 🙂
enjoy it all!!

Glad you got there safe ‘n sound. Miss you!!

Glad to hear/read that you’ve arrived safely. Someday Thumper will be able to say he travelled across the country at a very young age!
My husband likes to tell the story of his first cross-country road trip with his family: They drove across Canada when he was less than a year old. His parents put a big piece of plywood on the back seat to keep him and his sister from falling between the front and back seats! Ahhhh 1970 – child safety wasn’t the best, was it?

Doesn’t it feel great to be in your very own (bigger than a car) space again? When we moved with a one year old, as soon as we got to the new house she found her (entirely empty) room, layed herself down on the floor, and went into a deep, deep sleep. Here’s to the same happy vibe for you all!

Ooh, Congratulations! yeah for safe arrivals!

You made it – welcome to Portland! Heave a sigh of relief, and good luck with the unpacking.
If you give in to desperately needing more wifi before Thursday, check out the Personal Telco Project Nodes map:

Or Free Portland WiFi:
http://www.wifipdx.com/
(Man, I love Google! ‘Cause otherwise I know zip about wifi. Figured you might not have time/access to Google on your 5 minutes. [g] Of course, that’s supposing you get on again to see this before Thurs., LOL…)

Welcome, welcome — so glad you’re here. Have a wonderful time settling in and don’t forget to put the word out if you need help with anything. Lord knows, you’d have more volunteers than you could use!
Almost forgot, LOVE the picture of you in the red sweater — you’re both gorgeous.

I just peeked at your blog (linked from Knitty, of course), and I wanted to mention that I work at a knitting- AND child-friendly cafe in Portland that is open early AND late! It’s called Tandem Coffeehouse, at 3041 SE Division (tandemcoffeehouse.com). We just opened three weeks ago, but we used to be Mabel’s Cafe & Knittery, and the owner and staff are all the same: thus, we are extremely knitting-friendly. We have a large children’s play area, where many moms’ groups and families come to play. We have free WiFi. We have delicious pastries from Crema, bagels from Kettleman’s, and coffee from Stumptown. Oh, and pie. We have pie.
Come check us out! Cait is the owner, and I’m Eva.

Yay! Congratulations, you made it! I’m going to be heading up to Portland the week of the 1st myself on business. I just started a new job that may send me up there on occasion – once you’re settled in, maybe we could meet somewhere one of those times for a bit o’ knit and coffee?

I second the props for Tandem coffeehouse. I went there on Labor day morning for coffee and bagel and it was delish and the owner was super nice. As a fellow coffeshop/small business owner, I totally think you should check it out!

Welcome to Portland!
This is for Amy: Laurelwood Pizza Co (the old NE Laurelwood brewery) has free wi-fi (and a kid’s play area). They used to be open until midnight every day, but I’m unsure what their new hours are. The Kennedy School does too, they claim (I haven’t been there for a while, getting this off their webpage).
