Welcome to the finals of the Dogs Steal Yarn Sock Pageant. Who will be crowned Ms. Dogs Steal Yarn Sock 2005?
LetÂ’s meet our finalists:
Ms. Go With the Flow
Ms. Go With the Flow hails from Interweave Knits. She’s made of Elann Baby Cashmere, and was lovingly crafted on two Addi Turbo circular needles. She is especially proud of the fact that she was knit on size one needles. “I’m delicate but not tight, ya’ll,” she is often overheard saying. “And my lace pattern is tasteful, not slutty. No matter what that tubby Ms. Daffodil says. She was knit on twos, you know. Girl can’t help it that she’s thick like that. It’s just her gauge.”
Ms. Sweet Summer Short Sock
Summer, as she likes to be called (“No need to be so formal. IÂ’m a simple sock.”), is a basic sock pattern, but shortened at the leg for a cool, summery look. “Hence my name, you know.” SheÂ’s made of KnitPicks Dancing sock yarn in a cotton/wool/elastic blend. “IÂ’m versatile. Cari can wear me on all but the warmest of days. Not so with those other two. I donÂ’t mean to speak ill of my competitors. IÂ’m really a very positive pair of socks… But really…donÂ’t you think 100% wool is…well…somewhat limiting? I am proud, though, that all three finalists are house brand yarns. Ms. Daffodil is actually my cousin, and weÂ’re very fond of all the Elann yarns. You should have seen the snit the Koigu and LornaÂ’s girls were throwing backstage when they found out none of them had made the finals. WhoÂ’s worth ten bucks a skein now? I ask you. Oh—and I was knit on size zero Addis. Bet Flow didnÂ’t tell you that when she was crowing about her petite stitches.”
Ms. Daffodil
Ms. Daffodil shares her KnitPicks and basic pattern roots with Ms. Sweet Summer, but at her heavier gauge on size two Addis and her 100% Merino background, she feels her spiritual home is in the Pacific Northwest. “I think I’m the reincarnation of a sweater from Portland,” she says.
The talent portion of our competition, conducted earlier today, was quite exciting.
Ms. Go With the Flow wowed us with her fabulous flamenco. Who knew a pair of socks could clap, much less play the castanets?
Ms. Sweet Summer Short Sock brought the judges to tears with a heartfelt rendition of “Danny Boy” in a flawless soprano.
Ms. Daffodil got off to a rough start with her juggling act, but the magic act she followed with brought the house down. Here she is at the beginning of the “Saw my mate in half” trick. How DID she do that? (Judges investigated following Ms. Go With the Flow’s assertions that there was no magic involved, but that in fact Daffodil had cut her mate in half at a secretly steeked point in the foot and then grafted it back together. These allegations were found to be false and the scores were allowed to stand.)
The runway and talent competitions certainly were exciting. Now itÂ’s on to the interview competition! LetÂ’s catch up with our finalists and see what they have to say to our judges.
Judge: Ms. Go With the Flow, what is your greatest concern for young socks today?
Ms. GWTF: IÂ’m gravely concerned for the young socks coming up behind me, those who are still on the needles, those whose heels havenÂ’t yet been turned. Even the young balls of sock yarn, still tender and unknit. IÂ’m concerned because of the growing threat of Second Sock Syndrome. ItÂ’s a scourge, and we must band together as a foot accessory community to wipe it out. Why, on the way here today do you know I met a singleton sock that was five years old and still didnÂ’t have its mate. Five years, people! Sure, she looked young and fresh for never having been worn, but to live alone and mateless is no life for a sock.
Judge: Thank you, Ms. Flow. Now, Ms. Sweet Summer Short Sock, same question.
Ms. Summer: Thank you, Judge. Like my fellow finalist, Ms. Flow, I too am concerned with Second Sock Syndrome. However, I offer not just concern, but also a solution. I have created a foundation dedicated to finding singleton socks loving homes with humans who have either lost a foot or simply prefer to wear one sock at a time. There is also room in this program for education, to encourage the sock-wearing public to wear so-called “mismatched” socks. Being mateless does not have to doom a sock to an unfulfilling life!
Judge: Um, yes. Thank you. And Ms. Daffodil?
Ms. Daffodil: Um… World peace. IÂ’m in favor of world peace.
Ms. Go With the Flow: Oh please.

Whilst the contenders are dedicated and worthy, I’d say my vote is for Ms. Go With the Flow. She is classic yet chic, durable yet feminne, and reserved yet flirty. A total show stopper!

I feel that GWTF is a real princess (having met her), but perhaps not suited to the rigors of a life lived in the public eye. Although Ms Summer’s answers were intelligent and well thought out, I do think that her height brings her versatility into question.
So my vote goes to Daffodil, for her stripes and, hey – don’t we all want world peace?

Well, you know, I feel it’s a real shame they’ve done away with the swimsuit competition. Because really, it’s not objectifying in any way — it just shows GOOD HEALTH. you are so friggin’ brilliant. you’re just killing me. and i want you to know that in spite of the heat the muginess, you made me laugh out loud (really loud, if you must know), and remarkably, you actually made me crave socks. that speaks volumes about you. the moment the mercury grazes the 60 degree mark, i’m done with socks until it’s, well, COLD. not just cool, but cold. btw, it was a tough choice, but i have to cast my vote with daffodil.

This is a tough one. I feel that Summer really carried herself well. Her talent was elegant, well-rehersed and moving. Her interview response was thought-provoking, compassionate and represented a real sense of self-assurance and awareness. However, the awkward geek in me can really identify with Daffodil, and while I feel the contestants really should be judged on their own merits and not the personal experience of any particular judge, there is someting to be said for one being able to identify with the winner on a human level. However, I feel I must give my vote to Summer because she did perform the best in this venue. I encourage Daffy to continue to reach out to other socks and learn to love herself for who she is, a beautiful and comfy piece of handknit.

I believe that what Ms. Daffy meant to say before Ms. GWTF interrupted her was that handknit socks are the KEY to world peace.
And I don’t like Ms. GWTF’s attitude. Lace requires delicacy and I find her lack of tact disturbing.
Summer is sweet. I see many crowns in her future, but the day is won by Daffodil.

I believe that what Ms. Daffy meant to say before Ms. GWTF interrupted her was that handknit socks are the KEY to world peace.
And I don’t like Ms. GWTF’s attitude. Lace requires delicacy and I find her lack of tact disturbing.
Summer is sweet. I see many crowns in her future, but the day is won by Daffodil.
The best thing I’ve seen since returning to NYC. You’re the best, baby.

It was a tough decision, they’re all equally qualified. But I have to go with Ms. Daffodil. She just sits there and acts brainless, which is really all I expect from a sock.

the first round had me wondering who would come out on top, and by the end of the second round I had a better idea of the two I’d be picking from….but the last part of the competition did me in. Ms. Daffodil gets my vote: not only is she a good length, but is willing to play with knives and risk things, AND she could sum up what she wanted with a mere sentence or two. Ms. GWTF? she was in the running until I envisioned her rolling her (non-existant) eyes at the reponse; that’s just not fair play.
