My aunt died last night.

I won’t eulogize her here. Those are words for those who knew her, and those who knew her don’t read this blog. All I’ll say is that I love her, and that I will miss her. I’m grateful that her pain has ended. Grateful that her (grown) children were at her side at the end. Mentally she was up for the fight, but her body was just too tired.

Good bye, Aunt Joan. And thank you.

  1. I’m sorry to hear about your Aunt. I guess the quickness can be seen as a blessing but it’s still hard to deal with the loss of someone you love.

  6. My favorite role is that of aunt, esp. to an 11-year-old who lives around the corner. Thanks to the older ones, I’m also a great-aunt, now to two, soon to be five. I only hope that I can mean as much to some of them as your aunt did to you. You were both very lucky. My favorite aunt died exactly 20 years ago. My tears are for you as well as her.

  20. I’m so sorry to hear this news. My sister is fighting breast and bone cancer now, so I understand something about the toll it can take. Having lost a brother to cancer already, I know about feeling gratitude that the pain has ended. Your aunt was well loved, and I know that makes all the difference in the world. My condolences to you and your family.

  45. Cari – I’m so very sorry for your family’s loss. Words always seem so inadequate at times like this. When my mom passed away, my friend’s dad, who is Jewish, said a (Hebrew?) word to my father at the wake that summed it up for all of us. I can’t remember the word, but I can remember the sentiment: “We have met in better days.”
