yo quiero Madrid mas que nunca

I assume you’ve all read about this by now, but here’s the Times article.

As a New Yorker who lived through 9/11, as someone who lived in and loved Madrid, as a human being…I’m sick. Just fucking sick over this.

  1. I can only claim that third one, but I’m right there with ya, babe. Feeling hollowed out and devastated.

  2. I know this must be utterly devastating for you. I was glued to BBC World Service all day yesterday. I don’t know why I listened, I guess I was just trying to make sense of it all.
Cari, do you think it was ETA. I just don’t want to believe it. I have supported their cause for so long, but how can mass murder solve anything?

  3. Who knows… My guess would be that it was not ETA. I’m somewhat sympathetic to the Basque cause, but only somewhat, and I’ve never agreed with their methods. There were enough car bombs by them when I lived in Madrid that I find it hard to support them. This, though…it’s so far beyond the scale of anything ETA has done in the past that I would be shocked if it did turn out to have been them.

  4. From what I’ve read of the ETA, they seem intelligent enough to know that such an attack would only make the entire WORLD be against them. It doesn’t sound like their style (if one can use that word anywhere near this mass devastation).

Cari, I’m sorry. Just yesterday, when I read your post, I had one of those a-ha moments – of COURSE Cari has lived in Madrid. It made sense that you would have. So when I heard about the bombings, my heart broke for them and for you, love.

  5. another occasion for me to fear for the lives of beloved friends blessed and cursed to live in beloved cities.

one more time to feel relief at the discovery that they and their families escaped unharmed.

yet again, none of us escape unharmed.

will i be so lucky next time? will they? were we so lucky this time, left living in a world of perpetual retribution?

madre tierra, vida hermosa, hermana madrid, te quiero mucho.
