You guys got me all teary…and it’s not the hormones, I swear

Wow… Thank you all so very much for your congratulations and good wishes! It means so much to have heard from so many of you. And the lurkers! I love hearing from the lurkers!

Sniff. You guys rock. You really do.

I had another sonogram today. (I LOVE sonograms! So nice to get a peek at the little person in there.) The image I posted the other day is from 8 1/2 weeks. I hadn’t realized how much growing and developing happened between then and now. I saw two arms! And two legs! All of them waving around! And a profile! For better or worse, the kid looks like it’s (damn, I hate to use that pronoun. Reason enough to find out the sex.) growing my nose. Four weeks to the 16-week sonogram and hopefully we’ll learn the sex then.

In the meantime, there are Dale sweaters to ponder. As I mentioned, I bought some Dale baby pattern books to knit with Baby Ull. Ready for a glut of pictures of cute babies in cute knitwear? Sure you are.

Let me know what you think. Anything shown here in “boy” or “girl” colors (whatever that means) can of course be knit in different colors so the patterns are all fair game regardless of who turns out to be growing a nose like mine. I’m cool dressing a boy in pink, but I think that would be stretching Billy’s limits just a bit too much. So I’m not going to start any of these projects until we know who’s in there. Because if I can knit with pink and red and orange and purple (preferably all in one garment) you know I want to. (And yeah, we can put pink bootees on a boy when Billy’s not looking. I won’t tell.)

Here’s the sea lion sweater, which will be the first project because Billy and I both love it most of all:

dalesealion.jpg

And after that most wonderful sweater comes a parade of animals and stripes and checks and knitted goodness. They’re not in order of preference. I really can’t decide between them:

daleladybugs.jpg

dalepeapod.jpg

Obviously I won’t be knitting all of these, but it’s damn hard to choose. Let me know which ones you prefer! And if you’ve made any of these, I’d love to hear about it. Stinkerbell already did her best to put the fear of steeked ladybugs into me. 😉

  1. I LOVE the Sea Lion set! Great choice. And Kimomo style tops make baby dressing much, much easier. My vote for the next one would be the duck sweater. Small people wearing duck clothing really works for me. Quite possibly because once they’re old enough to have an opinion, they won’t let you put ’em in ducks anymore. Sigh.

  2. I love the superbright and colorful ladybug hat ensemble, almost like houses in Mexico.
    Hooray for machinewashable wools!

I didn’t leave a comment in the long list of congratulations before, but you should have heard me squeal at the news. Yay you!

  4. Oooh, the first three pictures are my favorite, and you could (possibly) start on one of them since they could be knit in “unisex” colors. Too cute!

  5. Congrats on the news! You are going to have the best (knit) dressed baby around…can’t wait to see all of the baby fluff you create in the next 7 months. 🙂

  6. Steeks be damned, I love the lady bugs, which come with the added benefit of gender neutrality. Runner up would be the cow jumper set. Can you tell I’m drawn to the vivid colors?

  15. Nooo! Don’t fear the ladybugs, knit them! I think that one’s the funnest (or most fun?) of all of them. I also really like the first one with a row of ducks and the cute little green overalls set. I think they’re overalls. Ugh! I need a baby!

  19. Another long time lurker.. Congratulations!! I also vote for the multi-colored ladybug hat and sweater – It seems like one of the easier things to get the child in or out of and its adorable.

It was said in another post but I definitely second a “kimono style” or anything with buttons on the shoulder seams to make the neckline bigger- these tiny people come with very large, soft, mushy heads attached to tiny necks and the idea of trying to stuff said head into a small neckline is not something any new mom needs.

  21. Don’t worry Cari – both of my kids sonograms and every other baby sonogram I have ever seen looks like the kid has a massive honker! For some reason the nose seems to grow fast first. 🙂 I assure you, my kids have normal noses…LOL!

As for the sweaters – they are all a-frickin-dorable! Knit them all!

  22. oh no. Fear of the steeked ladybugs? no! it’s simply a challenge that can be done with the cheering on of everyone reading – a process of growth similar to that of a baby. (a stretch, I know.) The ladybugs win my vote for “first after the sealion.

perhaps you could farm out sweaters to those of us interested in knitting for the little one (who’s nose surely can’t be that big yet but even so I am tickled with how much you saw!)? You (and Melanie and others who are with child) could (scheme together and) have a contest for something, and the winner gets to knit the design up? or help? It’s surely keep those of us reading along busy for the next several months…

Have you heard enough hoorahs and congratulations? I’m so so happy for you and Billy and the dogs! Hooray for having babies! It’s a fun exciting adventure and the beginning of so many new things in your lives!

I tell every first-time mother this: Live every moment. This is one of those rare “firsts” of life. You will never experience your first pregnancy or have your first baby again. It’s a once in a lifetime thing. (Yes, I savored my “last baby” three times thinking each time I’d never have another – this isn’t quite the same.) Your first time to feel a baby kick in your tummy (and the second, and the thousandth). The first time you hear its heartbeat. The first time the ultrasound tech looks at you and your husband and says, “It looks like a ____.” Those are undescribable moments. Treasure those moments and every moment in between because you can’t re-live them and it’ll never be the first time again. Congratulations again. (((Hugs)))

ESPECIALLY THE BLUE GINGHAM. I covet that chick’s hair too, those bangs rule!

Also, the bescarfed duck, because those ducks underneath look so confident. Full eye contact.

The pink stripes because it reminds me of Raggedy Ann (the heart!) and it’s slightly punk.

The cow hat is slightly mean, but I’m NOT above putting a child in THIS:

  69. I love number 5 from the top. You could put all your favourite colors into it.

But I’d make it into a cardigan for practicality and maximum usage. And I’d use I-cord and a zipper rather than buttons. Buttons can be hard to do up on a squirming baby. Also, a lot of people like to use fancy shaped buttons on a baby sweater because they are so cute, but those kinds of buttons have a tendency to pop open.

    That’s my two cents!

    Cheers,
    Laurie

And congratulations! It’s funny – after high school and then again right after college, there was a rush to have babies for a lot of young women I knew and I never felt comfortable with that. Now, all the cool, mature, self-sufficient, worldly women I seem to know or read are having babies and it makes me feel good. You will be a great mom. Thank you for sharing thegood news with us!

  76. Delurking to say: a) the sonogram post was perhaps the most dramatic thing I’ve ever seen on any blog. Also wonderful. Congratulations!
and b) I love the green onesie outfit.
and c) (at the risk of becoming an instigator of baby-yarn buying) if you use gender-neutral colors (like, ahem, red and yellow and orange) you could start knitting now…

  78. The sea lion is too cute! I also love the sweater with the little scarf-wearing birdie. I’d consider altering it and putting some buttons at the shoulder seam, though. Their heads are big and supposedly most infants don’t like having things pulled over them. I know my boy didn’t.

    Yay for itsy-bitsy sweaters!

  79. Awwww! 1) Sea Lion for sure, 2) Ducks, and 3) Whatever that cute little thing is with the scarf. 🙂 And the stripey little pants which should be knit in pink/red/orange/purple and coordinate with all the sweaters!!!

  82. Congratulations from a lurker! I have made some Dale sweaters and cardis for my daughter, and they are such fun knits! And Babyull is a wonderful yarn for babies (but not for bigger kids, as it doesn’t take much wear). But the models tend to be really big if you don’t pay close attention to gauge. It’s difficult to knit with (or find!) smaller needles than the recommended 2.5 mm, but someone gave me the advice to always knit one size smaller than intended, but at the same time use the length measurements for the larger size, which has worked out really well. I think most of the patterns you are considering are pretty unisex, so I see no reason not to start right away! Good luck!

Oh, congratulations Cari. And to Billy too! I wish you all the very best health and happiness in your pregnancy. My son had the same due date! And made me crave orange juice too. Geminis are very sweet babies, I think, but then I’m biased!
I love your choices of knitwear- bright colours are the best and are so cute on either a boy or girl… you can save them for future children too!?

  84. Oh man, how could you ever choose?? I love the sea lion and also the stripes. You will have to have lots more babies so these beautiful works of art can be worn for more than just a few months. Also, I heard about a book called “knitting for two” with maternity patterns and baby patterns, but it could just be an urban knitting myth. Either way, congratulations and happy knitting.

  88. It’s simple: the boy colour is blue and the girl colour is pink. But don’t worry — it’s not a gender role assignment thing, it’s just to keep everyone from asking the tactless question of what hanging or not hanging between your kid’s legs.

    Cheers,
    Laurie

  95. Aw, man, I love ’em all. Did you really have to show me that whole parade of adorableness? Sheesh, we haven’t even set a wedding date yet — what are you trying to do to me?

But if I had to pick, I’d go for #s 3 and 4, the blue/yellow ones with the appliqued ducks on the front.

  96. Knit the ladybug sweater! I’m in love with that one, and is probably the first thing I’ll cast on for when I one day get pregnant. 🙂

  97. Hey, i happen to like your nose. The green outfit that makes the baby look like a giant snowpea is really doing it for me. So, of course, is the red cow. I would wear the red cow in a New York second if someone made it in my size (and I swear that’s not a hint). hugs to you!

  98. I’m a huge fan of the checks with the ducky border – it’s just too cool.

  99. The penguin! I can’t believe no one else loves the penguin. Yes, ducks and ladybugs are awesome, but the penguin takes the cake. It’s knitwear with a *motif wearing knitwear*.

  100. Let some friends do some knitting for you ! Everyone thought the chick would have superfluous knitwear. I didn’t manage one garment whilst pregnant ! To start with I was too tired, then I got really bad carpal tunnel syndrome. I managed half a lace border of a shetland shawl.
    So,farm out that knitting.
Didn’t stop me enjoying the pregnancy though !

  102. Oh I just love them all! How can one be forced to make a decision when baby knits are all so darn cute!?!

  104. Awwww! 1) Sea Lion for sure, 2) Ducks, and 3) Whatever that cute little thing is with the scarf. 🙂 And the stripey little pants which should be knit in pink/red/orange/purple and coordinate with all the sweaters!!!

  105. Congratulations on the impending wee one!

I love the green onesie and the sweater with the duckies. And I like the bright colors in the ladybug sweater. All beautiful choices!

  106. even if i am in the minority on this one — yellow sweater with duck (penguin?) in a scarf!

  107. Good luck!

  108. I miss checking your blog for a few days and miss the most exciting news ever!!

  110. Damn gateway baby sweaters. Quit it. My quiet little clock ticks louder.
    (delighted) mwah!

  111. Oh, so much cuteness! I vote for the checks at the top, and the hoodie. It has checks, too. Hmm. But they are all so sweet. Like you. And your nose.

  112. A belated congratulations. What fun. For me, babies are all about the barnyard. Chickens, cows, bears (okay, it’s a Montana barnyard) what I mean to say is: I love those chickens.

  113. It’s simple: the boy colour is blue and the girl colour is pink. But don’t worry — it’s not a gender role assignment thing, it’s just to keep everyone from asking the tactless question of what hanging or not hanging between your kid’s legs.

  114. Oh, I’m all teary, too. I just can’t wait. I’m proud to say I’ll be patting your belly every step of the way. (When this new addition comes along, he/she will probably smack me and say – “OH – YOU’RE the one!!???!)

    xoxo

  115. The duck dress and hat are my favorites if baby’s a girl, but I really like the checks too, and that could be for either gender.

I really like the striped one with the heart. It’s kinda rock n roll, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it in a boutique. And I know you guys are totally going to have a rocker baby, right?

  117. Wow! Congrats from yet another lurker. Love all the Dale patterns, but have you seen the Debbie Bliss baby patterns? They are way way cute- but be forewarned- a little on the big side. We weren’t able to discern the sex of our child pre-delivery (little devil kept her legs crossed the entire time)(good girl)-so we went with Debbie Bliss. I even made a black and white sweater with red pom pom trim (drove my traditional mother mad) All the best!

  118. I been happily lurking for over two years, but now I must say congratulations!
Like many others I am especially fond of the Blue Gingham with the little yellow ducks. It would be cute in pink gingham as well.

  119. Congratulations!

I vote for the blue gingham with ducks. It’s one of my very favorite baby sweaters ever that, unfortunately, I did not find out about until my child was too old for it. The other nice thing about that one is that it will look cute on a boy or a girl.

  123. They are all gorgeous. I am thinking machine washable yarns though – nothing worse than something sitting in the laundry pile until it is too small because you didn’t have time to hand wash it.

  125. I know it’s too late, but I love the duck set, the second one. Thing about Dale of Norway patterns, they’re so complete. Socks, hat, sweater, optional jumper, etc. Whatever you make will be sooooo cute!
